Reading Liberally will be meeting next Thursday, June 29 at Jed’s humble abode. The book for discussion is Matthew Stewart’s “The Courtier and the Heretic: Leibiniz, Spinoza, and the fate of God in the Modern World.” Having read it or not, you are sure to have a good time. Contact Jed for more details: jedelison[ at ]hotmail.com
If I ever get the time and know-how, I want to create a “link dump” for our site, where people can log in and post links to things they find on the internet that are interesting.
Until then, I’ll just post them here in the normal front page spot, and I’d encourage everyone reading this to do the same. When your time and attention is limited, as I’m sure is the case with many of us, it’s nice to have a place that just shows you the best and/or most interesting things on the Internet.
So, here’s what I’m reading:
Washington Post: Bank Records Secretly Tapped. Suprising? No. Outrageous? Yes. But just like the story of the frog in the slowly boiling water, America won’t realize that all their rights have been stripped until they’re all gone.
Salt Lake Tribune: Jeffrey Nielson Op-Ed. Since I missed this one in the paper, and I’ve heard all about the controversy, I figured I better look it up. In case you’re living under a rock- this is the BYU professor who was fired for stating that it just might be contrary to the moral values of the LDS church that the leaders support the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. I originally found the link here: blurbomat.com
Discovery News: Serious Study: Immaturity Levels Rising. I’m convinced there’s a tie between conservatives and psychological neoteny, I just can’t pinpoint it now. Any ideas?
For those who use the Windows XP operating system, try this: open notepad (Start menu -> Run, and type “notepad” and hit enter) and type the following on the first line with no carriage return:
Bush hid the facts
Then save the file (it doesn’t matter what you name it) and close it. Now open the file. The text should have changed.
What is the most important thing that Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton have in common?

It all started just one year ago… less than a dozen strangers gathered at Mo’s Tavern with hopes of finding “others” like them. With no agenda, and no idea what the future would bring, Drinking Liberally of Salt Lake City was born.
One year later, 250 strong and growing, it is time to celebrate! Join us for a night of “guiltless pleasure” as we attend Saturday’s Voyeur 2006 - Bendover: The Tale of Two Cities on Friday, August 11.
For those who have never been exposed to Saturday’s Voyeur, it is Salt Lake Acting Company’s 2½ hour jab at living in Utah. It is also a place where liberals are the majority. Cabaret table seating is available.
Recently reviewed by Jeremiah, he says, “It is funny as hell!” Heather and Beckie gave it a thumbs up and said “Definitely much better than last year!”
Bring a picnic basket (food and drinks of all types are allowed) and join the fun.
To order tickets: Call 363-7522 and say you are with Heather Culligan and Drinking Liberally.
HURRY!! SLAC will only hold our Drinking Liberally seats until July 10th at which time they will be released to the general public.
Already bought your tickets? Simply call and change nights. Or better yet - go again!
Any recommendations??? When I walked into my bathroom this morning my shower started before turning on the water! I feel it safe to say that the hole in my ceiling where the water is coming from indicates that there is a leak in my roof (rocket scientist, you say?). I need someone reputable who can patch the roof without creating more leakage (which is what will happen as soon as I get up there). If you know of someone reputable and affordable, (do they come together?) please call me at 556-1468 or email at beckie.bradshaw@granite.k12.ut.us.
Thanks
Beckie
Colin Powell once observed that Ronald Reagan’s plan to exchange defense technology with the Soviets was inspired by a famous film. What was that film?
A. The Sound of Music
B. Invaders from Mars
C. The Day the Earth Stood Still
