treats for troops

Time for our 2nd annual TREATS for TROOPS endeavor at Valley Fair Mall….

TREATS FOR TROOPS
It is once again that time of year. “We Love Our Soldiers” (www.sendyoursupport.org) 2nd annual “treats for troops” endeavor with Valley Fair Mall is on. For the entire month of October we invite you to stop by center court, visit the pumpkin patch, and contribute to the gift boxes that will be sent to our troops serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. All items donated will be sent in time to reach our soldiers for the Christmas season. They need each and every one of us to participate in order to help make their Holiday one that they will remember for the support they received from home during this difficult time.
Please support this effort generously. Our soldiers need and deserve all that we can do on their behalf. In order to make this happen for them, we urge you to give from your heart, and tell everyone you know what a difference they can make for a soldier this year by donating also.
We need financial contributions, as well as the fun items to send in the boxes. Each box costs about 40 dollars to send, and is filled with enough items for 4 soldiers. That is only 10 dollars per soldier. What a small price to pay to put a smile on the face of a lonely, homesick, tired soldier far from home. We’re counting on your support. And, you will feel marvelous knowing you have done such a generous and thoughtful thing for someone who is sacrificing so much for all of us.
You can also come trick or treating at the mall on Halloween from 5-7 pm, and visit us at our table. At that time, you can also write a card or note to soldier we will be enclosing in our care packages.
As always, we thank you for your continued support!!
Look forward to seeing you at Valley Fair Mall.

Drinking Liberally at the Utah Brewers Festival

Utah Brewers Festival

We are excited to have been invited to have a booth at the Utah Brewers Festival on October 6th. It will be held at the Gallivan Center (239 S. Main Street) and will have quite a number of local breweries.

This will be a great opportunity to find more Liberal Drinkers in Salt Lake, extend our liberal social circles, and try some good local beer.

The Brewers Festival has offered to waive the standard booth fee, but we need to get volunteers to thank them. If you’re interested in spending a few hours helping sell T-Shirts, help with a dart tournament, etc. please send us an e-mail and we’ll get you in touch with the organizer. saltlakecity at drinkingliberally.org.

WISH SHE WOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT!

I received this email yesterday! It amazes me and scares me that this sentiment not only exists but persists among our citizens. My response to this follows at the bottom….. Carla

Shame shame shame

According to a recent NIE report, Al Qaeda is every bit as functional and organized as it was prior our losing 3776 soldiers, over 27,700 wounded, and over 70,000 slain civilian Iraqis as well. And then to hear from Petraeus himself, the commander of the multinational forces that even he doesn’t know if our efforts in Iraq are making America safer, and that the primary cause of violence is sectarian strife and the battle for power and resources, and I wonder what ever happened to the “global war on terror”? Wasn’t Bin Laden at one point in time the primary target in our quest to avenge 9-11? I seem to recall a wanted “dead or alive” exclamation from our president some time ago. I can only imagine the satisfaction he (Bin Laden) derives from being able to shown up at will, taunting us, reminding us that he is still out there. What are we doing folks?

All the talk, the hot air, the endless debate, posturing by wanna be presidents and the like, the bloviating, and still our nation and our soldiers carry the heavy burden of political paralysis and inaction. The cost is staggering in every way imaginable, and grows exponentially with each and every day. What needs to happen before we collectively demand answers as to how much blood has to spill for a cause that has an ever changing rationale, and a president still on the stump attempting to sell his war to the American people?

Make no mistake, we are all being held political hostage in this endless, mindless, despicable shell game, and we have abdicated our civic responsibility as evidenced by the continued hubris and arrogance displayed by those who know they can get away with politicizing this war until Jan 20, 2009. I see more studied thought and commentary on school vouchers and UTA bus service than on the “defining battle of the 21st century”.

Shame On Us

I’m so discouraged. Every wanna be president, congressman, pundit and scholar has come out with assessments, critique, and proposals for the “way forward” in Iraq. A lot of talk, and very little action. Meanwhile, I don’t think many of us are paying much attention to the details anyway. At least not outside a handful of peace activists and military families as far as I can tell. If that were the case, how could so many of us be duped for so very long, over and over again? You’d think with our way of life and freedom on the line in this “defining battle of the 21st century”, more of us would be actively engaged and pro active. I realize our president told us all to go shopping, that he would handle this pesky business without our needing to be bothered…but, by now haven’t we had enough “mall therapy”, and shouldn’t we ALL really be paying attention? Even Bin Laden (wanted dead or alive) has shown up again to stick in his two cents.

The Petraeus er, white house “surge” report, will promote signs of success. We’ll be chided to be patient, and to give it a chance. “This time” they have the right strategy in place. Bush’s recent photo op in Al Anbar province should erase any doubt that we are succeeding, right? All so very reassuring I suppose…unless you happen to be the loved one or parent mourning one of the 3760 killed, or 27767 wounded to date. Or among the ones who will yet pay the ultimate sacrifice while we continue to debate their fate in Washington.

Operation: Shock And Awe

You have been sent this email because of our shared concern and frustration over our nation’s continuing Occupation of Iraq, and the inability of Congress to move past debate and come to a reasonable and prompt resolution.

Rep. Jim Matheson needs to know that it is morally right, politically safe and long past due that he votes to authorize funds only for the purpose of redeploying our troops out of harm’s way in the upcoming vote on the 2008 Iraq Appropriations bill. We’re reaching out to our congressman in a way that has yet to be done and we’re asking you to join us in… Operation: Shock and Awe.

A great disservice is being done by censoring the images of the victims of war—American and Iraqi, and especially the children. Make him see these most graphic images in numbers too great to be ignored by participating in Operation: Shock and Awe.

We understand this will entail an out of pocket expense of no more than $50 (cost of ink, paper, envelopes, and postage for this 30 day project) along with your time and effort. But isn’t that a small price to pay to end the Occupation of Iraq? Our goal is 1000 images, so anything you can do to help us will be deeply appreciated.

Imagine the reaction as these pictures pile up, day after day, week after week. Please contact Carla Hitz (fliarmy at msn.com) to let us know if you’ll be participating, or to submit links to photos. We’ll be tracking the effort and issuing press releases as the campaign progresses. It will be a more effective campaign if we can report hundreds of photos are being sent each week. Please forward this email to likeminded people you know who live in the second congressional district.

Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half of the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.
