Pioneering liberals,
Because there were 5 Fridays in July, our next Drinking Liberally meetup won’t be for two weeks- August 13th. BUT, we have been invited to screen the documentary Countdown to Zero on Friday, August 6th at 7pm.
Countdown to Zero traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possess nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident.
Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair.
Countdown to Zero makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today.
The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and 2009 nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute. http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/countdowntozero/
We have some free tickets for anyone interested, just reply to this email and let us know if you’d like to go.
Living Liberally, the parent org to Drinking Liberally, has chosen Salt Lake City to host its annual national conference. We’re pretty excited about it and hope that you, our wonderful SLC liberals, will help us plan and promote the conference to make it the best. We’re looking for people with social connections who can hook us up with free stuff to make it a kick ass party and conference. Even though Heather is leaving next week, she’s still going to plan it and still plans on coming back for the conference.
Have a good weekend!
Heat of the summer liberals,
Just a reminder that the SLC Drinking Liberally meetup is tomorrow night (Friday, July 23rd) in the back room of the Piper Down from 6:30-9:30. It’ll be a regular fun night of socializing over drinks. I (Jeremiah) personally won’t be there because I’m at the Netroots Nation conference in Las Vegas. I’m socializing with some of the other Drinking Liberally hosts from around the country, hoping to get them excited to come to Salt Lake for the Living Liberally national conference.
Speaking of the national conference: Living Liberally, the parent org to Drinking Liberally, has chosen Salt Lake City to host its annual national conference. That’s all for now. See you next Friday!

BBQ-season liberals,
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Drinking Liberally SLC summer BBQ and especially those who brought food to share, it was a lot of fun. And thanks also to Gina at Sugared Magnolia, who decorated a beautiful and delicious rum cake on pretty short notice.
And if you haven’t yet seen Saturday’s Voyeur this year, we highly recommend it. It kept us laughing the whole time. If you’re new to Utah, this is a great introduction to the absurd stories of the last year. This should be required viewing for every Utah liberal, in my opinion. http://saltlakeactingcompany.com/this-season/saturdays-voyeur
Our next Drinking Liberally SLC meetup is next Friday, July 23rd, but if you want to socialize with other liberals before then, you can help future governor Peter Corroon celebrate his birthday this Saturday. Partying liberals,
Two things to tell you about this week: First, this Friday is a regular meetup in the back room of the Piper Down. We’ll be there from 6:30 to 9:30, so come join us at any time.
Then, on Sunday (July 11th) starting at 4:30, we’re having our annual Drinking Liberally SLC summer BBQ and Saturday’s Voyeur outing.
Even if you didn’t get your tickets to Saturday’s Voyeur, come to the BBQ, especially since it’ll also a going away party for Heather. Heather will be leaving Utah in less than two weeks to take a job in Florida. We’re incredibly happy for her, but she will be missed. So come wish her farewell and good luck in this next chapter of her life.
The BBQ and party will be at Heather’s house. She’s 1 convenient block from the Salt Lake Acting Company theater at 214 W. 600 N. We’ll fire up the grill at 4:30 which you’ll be free to use. Bring your own booze and food to share if you’d like. Heather will stay to host the BBQ while those of us with Saturday’s Voyeur tickets go to the performance. Remember, you’re welcome to bring food and drinks to the performance too!

See you Friday and again on Sunday!

Mid-year liberals,
Attention: this is your last reminder to buy your tickets for Saturday’s Voyeur! They must be purchased by Monday, July 5th for the Sunday, July 11th, 7pm performance. There are still some seats left, but grab them quick. This is always a fun show!
Once again, this year we’ll be going to Salt Lake Acting Company’s hilarious cabaret, Saturday’s Voyeur. If you love good satire on Utah culture and current events (and there’s plenty to choose from – hot tubs and DUI’s, anyone?), you should plan on joining us for this.
When you tell them you’re with Drinking Liberally SLC, they’ll put you with the rest of us AND you get the tickets for $35 each, which is $9-$19 off regular price! Box office number is (801)363-7522. Again you must buy your tickets by July 5th!
We’ll also be having pre-show drinks and BBQ at Heather’s house before the show. She’s 1 convenient block from the theater at 214 W. 600 N. We’ll fire up the grill at 4:30 which you’ll be free to use. Bring your own booze, and food to share if you’d like. We’ll have ice, plates & utensils, and most likely some fruit and snacks. Remember, you’re welcome to bring food and drinks to the performance too!
Everyone is welcome to the BBQ even if you don’t plan on going to the play, and you can even stay and socialize when everyone else goes the play. So really, why wouldn’t you come?
As we announced previously, Living Liberally, the parent org to Drinking Liberally, has chosen Salt Lake City to host its annual national conference. This is a great opportunity for Salt Lake liberals to show people from across the country why we choose to live here, despite the sometimes oppressive laws & lawmakers.
