Stuffed liberals,
Just a reminder we will NOT be meeting tonight, due to the holiday weekend. We hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!
And now the good news we promised in the last email: Starting in December, we’ll be going back to weekly meetups! A few regular Drinking Liberals volunteered to step up and host on the first and third Fridays. No more having to pull up a calendar to see if it’s a 2nd or 4th Friday!
You might already know Jason and his sister Casey, who will be hosting on the 1st Fridays of the month, and Christian and Kelly Jo will be hosting on the 3rd Fridays of the month. Many thanks to them for offering to help get our group back to an every week meeting!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and we’ll see you next week!

Accountability-loving liberals,
Thanks to everyone who joined us last week for the post-election discussion with Tim Chambless. Drinking Liberally members showed their frustration with the election and the Democratic party, but also brought ideas to the table. Check out Brandon’s Big Gay Blog to get his take on it: City Weekly.
As you’ve probably heard, former President George W. Bush is in town tonight to do a book signing at the Sandy Costco. Because Utah was Bush’s number one fan, it should be no surprise that people were already lining up yesterday afternoon. Ugh. Luckily we’ve got a human rights organization in town whose executive director is not afraid to show some dissidence. Rocky Anderson is holding a “Rally for Accountability” today (Friday) in Pioneer Park from 12:00 to 1:00. More information here: http://www.highroadforhumanrights.net/
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend falling on the fourth Friday this month, we won’t be meeting again until December. But pay attention to next week’s email for some good news!

Analytic liberals,
We’ve all had time to sulk, maybe get angry, or maybe even celebrate the few wins we had from the last election. Well, this Friday we’ll have the time to analyze it as University of Utah Political Science professor and Drinking Liberally favorite Tim Chambless joins us as our guest speaker! He’ll go over the election results and what the implications are for Utah and the rest of the nation.
So join us tomorrow, November 12, in the back room of the Piper Down. We’ll be there at 6:30, with Tim speaking around 7:30. Tim is always a popular guest, so get there on time if you want a good seat!
See you tomorrow!

Liberals with the post-election blues,
Utah liberals are used to disappointment on election day, but this one seemed to be especially brutal and depressing. But a blog post from Justin Krebs on the Drinking Liberally website made me feel better:
Following last night’s election, many folks are going to need a drink.
More than at any point in the past two years, they will be seeking out their liberal community. They may be frustrated and need to vent. They may be reinvigorated and want to share ideas. They may be eager to learn from peers. They may be ready to get to work beating back the right-wing.
Good thing we have Drinking Liberally.
Here’s the thing: elections come and go. Candidates often vanish after election day. Grassroots groups sometimes power down until the next campaign.
A real community is there month-after-month, year-after-year, and Drinking Liberally is a real political community for liberals all over the country, and increasingly around the world.
I feel now a little like I did on November 3rd, 2004. There are some results that sadden me most, as I’m sure there are for you. I am uncertain where to focus my energy next.
Fortunately, now — as then — Drinking Liberally is there to give me a home. In 2004, we saw surging attendance as liberals got together to organize, re-engage and, of course, drink.
We still play that role.
We’re not sure what strategy will most effectively push our country on a progressive course, and who can say what the next two years will look like? Nonetheless, we still have each other.
Drinking Liberally chapters can expect strangers to show up for the first time and familiar faces to return to the fold.
