Guest speaker Tim DeChristopher!

This Friday we welcome Tim DeChristopher of Peaceful Uprising as our guest speaker:

In December 2008, Tim DeChristopher disrupted an oil and gas auction to allay further climate change. By registering as a bidder, Tim drove up prices on many parcels and eventually won over a million dollars worth of oil leases before federal agents removed him from the room. The auction was disrupted so effectively that no one knew what to do for a while, and the leases remained in suspension. Later, a judge ruled that the process had been corrupt all along (courtesy of the outgoing Bush administration) and shortly thereafter, Secretary Salazar formally nullified the whole process, erasing the auction results completely. It was not until April 1st that two felonies were formally filed against Tim: one for violating the “Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Act,” and one for making false statements to the government (by filling out the form to go into the auction). Now he faces trial and ten years in prison.

Tim will be talking about the power of juries in social influence from 7:15 – 7:45, and he’ll answer your questions afterward. As usual, we’ll be in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6:30.

Then stick around to chat about the SOTU, an official state handgun, or whatever political shenanigans you’ve had your eye on.

See you tomorrow night!

Drinking Liberally tomorrow

The State of the Union Address is this Tuesday, and Colorado Senator Mark Udall has suggested that the members of Congress break tradition and sit together regardless of party affiliation. But with the House voting to repeal Healthcare Reform, the Republicans don’t seem too concerned about being conciliatory.

Meanwhile, President Obama, in a joint news conference with Chinese President Hu, was more apologetic about China’s human rights violations than President Hu himself.

And now we’re learning that the founder of Blackwater financed a mercenary firm in Somalia!

Is it any wonder we Drink Liberally? Join us tomorrow (Friday the 21st) for another round of Drinking Liberally in the back room of the Piper Down from 6:30 to 9:30.

And please join us NEXT Friday as we welcome Tim DeChristopher of
Peaceful Uprising
as our guest speaker. He’ll be talking about the power of juries in social influence, as well as sticking around for Q&A afterward. If you’re new to Utah, you can check out
Tim’s story here.

Meetup tomorrow plus guest speaker announcement

First, thanks to Reps Rebecca Chavez-Houck and Jen Seelig for coming out last week to talk about the upcoming legislative session. My apologies for not including an announcement in the email last week.

This week has shown a flurry of high emotions following the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabby Giffords on Saturday. It’s led many to wonder if the tone of the rhetoric from some politicians and pundits had a factor. Sarah Palin took down her map with Rep. Giffords district in the crosshairs, and now she’s on the defensive.

Some our questioning the purpose of handguns in a civilized society, while our own Rep. Jason Chaffetz says he’ll start carrying a gun more often as a precaution. State Rep. Carl Wimmer is going even further and
plans to introduce a bill
that would eliminate the requirement for gun owners in Utah to have a concealed weapon permit.

I haven’t watched it yet, but I hear Obama’s speech at the Tucson memorial last night was excellent. You can
watch it here.

It’s all a lot to think about and discuss, so join us tomorrow (Friday) from 6:30-9:30 in the back room of the Piper Down and you can do just that.

And if you’re looking for something else to talk about, there’s also the new Matt Taibbi article on Speaker Boehner. It’s a good read. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/matt-taibbi-the-crying-shame-o…

We’re happy to announce that on January 28th we will have Tim DeChristopher of Peaceful Uprisingas our guest speaker. He’ll be talking about the power of juries in social influence, as well as sticking around for Q&A afterward. If you’re new to Utah, you can check out

Liberals of the new year,

We hope everyone had a good, safe new year celebration!

This, the first Friday of the new year, we’ll be meeting at our usual place, the back room of Piper Down from 6:30-9:30. Since we haven’t met in some weeks, there should be plenty to talk about, especially with the new Republican house taking office.

See you at Piper Down tonight!
