Good Day fellow DL’ers,
This April Fool’s Day we will be having our regular meeting from 6:30-9:30 PM in the back room (Temple Bar) at Piper Down (1492 South State St.)
This week we will be having David Morris, the proprietor of Piper Down will be speaking to us about Utah’s ever-changing liquor laws and how it effects him as a small business owner. As many of us know, he had a big struggle opening Piper Down followed by annual tweaks and revisions to our liquor laws that every bar owner must cope with.
We have a long-ish message this week. In good news: We made City Weekly’s Best Of List as Best Tipsy Poli-Sci Fix
Also, if you buy tickets to this year’s Politisauce from http://www.slcountydems.com and tell them you are with Drinking Liberally, they can arrange to have everyone assigned to the same tables.

Also,
Phew, the legislative session is over. Well, except for the special session that’s supposed to happen tomorrow to repeal the wildly unpopular HB477. If you’re like me you need someone to explain what happened this session, and who better to do just that than the inimitable and astute Paul Rolly of the Salt Lake Tribune. He’ll be speaking at our meetup tomorrow (Friday) from 7:15 until about 8 with a Q&A after, but I’m sure it’ll be packed so it’s best to get there early.
Next week we’ll have Dave Morris, the owner of the Piper Down, talk about the changes in the Utah liquor laws and how it affects small businesses like his.
Then in two weeks, on April 8th, we’ll have Salt Lake City mayor Ralph Becker talking about his plans to continue to move Salt Lake City forward with progressive legislation, and his philosophy and methods for working successfully in the challenging political environment that is Utah.
And on April 15th we’ll have representatives from the Salt Lake City chapter of NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. I’m sure they’ll have something to say about the recent warning from Utah law enforcement about the rise in marijuana farms here in the state.
And remember, if you like what we’re doing, tell your friends and encourage them to come to a meetup.
See you tomorrow night!

We’ve been bringing in quite a few guest speakers lately, and we’ve got even more on the horizon.
On March 25th we’ll have none other than Paul Rolly from the Salt Lake Tribune to debrief us on the legislative session. And I’m sure he’ll have plenty to say on HB477, the GRAMA restrictions affecting not only the media, but you and I as well. He’ll be speaking from 7:15 to around 8, with a Q&A after.
Then on April 8th, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker will be joining us. He’ll be talking about his plans to continue to move Salt Lake City forward with progressive legislation, and his philosophy and methods for working successfully in the challenging political environment that is Utah.
And on April 15th we’ll have representatives from the Salt Lake City chapter of NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
So, a lot of fun stuff coming up.
This week is just a regular (though still fun!) Drinking Liberally meetup. As always, we’ll be in the back room of the Piper Down from 6:30 to about 9:30. Grab a friend and come join us.

We meet again tomorrow at our regularly scheduled and our regularly scheduled place. (6:30-9:30 PM in Piper Down’s Temple Bar)
For the first 45 minutes this week we will have a special round table discussion with Jordan Fitzgerald Smith about her first hand experience during the Egyptian revolution.
Jordan graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Utah in Middle East Studies and a Master’s Degree in French. She has spent the last two years living and working in Alexandria Egypt. She was there during the first two weeks of the revolution. She will be available to discuss what life was like before, during and potentially after the uprising.
Here is a link to her blog that she wrote while the revolution was taking place:

Then we will have our regular DL social time.
It has been an eventful week in Utah with our previous guest speaker Tim DeChristopher sadly being found guilty on two felony charges.
