Drinking Liberally tonight!

Just a quick reminder that we’ll be meeting in the back room of the Piper Down tonight starting at 6:30.

October 7th we’ll have Senator Ben McAdams out to talk to us about the status, and what it means to Utah’s political future. So save the date on that one!

And finally, The Muslims are Coming! Negin Farsad, a comedian from our sister group Laughing Liberally in NYC, will be stopping in Salt Lake on October 8th for a FREE standup comedy show. Negin was named One of the 50 Funniest Women by Huffington Post, and having hung out with her at Netroots Nation in Minneapolis, I’d definitely have to agree. More info here. And tell your friends!

See you tonight!

Drinking Liberally tomorrow

Another week, another slew of things to talk about when you join us for Drinking Liberally tomorrow in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6:30.

Let’s see, last night the state of Georgia executed a man for the murder of a police officer, despite serious doubt of his guilt. It’s another shameful mark on American history. However, on a brighter note, the military policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is finally history.

Locally, the governor has called for a special session on October 3rd so our legislature can discuss and vote on redistricting. Then at the end of the week (October 7th) we’ll have Senator Ben McAdams out to talk to us about the status, and what it means to Utah’s political future. So save the date on that one!

And finally, The Muslims are Coming! Negin Farsad, a comedian from our sister group Laughing Liberally in NYC, will be stopping in Salt Lake on October 8th for a FREE standup comedy show with other Muslim comedians. Negin was named One of the 50 Funniest Women by Huffington Post, and having hung out with her at Netroots Nation in Minneapolis, I’d definitely have to agree. More info here. And tell your friends!

See you tomorrow night!

Drinking Liberally 9-16

Come join us Friday night 9-16 for our regular meetup from 6:30-9:30 pm at Piper Down (1492s State St.). We have a plethera of topics to talk about. From Obama’s jobs bill to the tea party debate where it was made clear that they have switched from the stance of, death panels bad, to let the uninsured die.
Leading the GOP to now be split over support of the tea party. Which could possibly lead to Bachman or PArry to run on a seperate presidential ticket if they don’t get the Republican nomination. Maybe? Maybe not? Well come on down and have a pint or two and discuss it with me and the rest of the group.

Also keep your eyes peeled for upcoming dates for guest speakers.

See You There,
Christian, Kelly Jo,

Drinking Liberally tomorrow night

President Obama is set to announce his American Jobs Act tonight. If he were giving the speech tomorrow we could watch it at Piper Down and maybe even make a drinking game out of it (a must for any GOP debate). But we’ll just have to settle for discussing the pros and cons of his plan when we meet from 6:30 – 9:30 in the back room of the Piper Down tomorrow.

And for something else to talk about, here’s a good article about a GOP operative who decided he no longer wanted to be just that: http://www.truth-out.org/goodbye-all-reflections-gop-operative-who-left-…

And if you just want to come out for small talk with friends, that’s okay too.

See you tomorrow night!

Drinking Liberally September 2nd Meeting

Happy Labor Day! Those of you who are not squeezing every last drop out of Summer this weekend should join us for our regularly scheduled meeting in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South State St.) tonight from 6:30 until 9:30 PM.

This week we will be joined by a large group for Nikki Norton Nelmark’s going away party. Nikki has been the Utah Director of OFA and is now moving to Washington DC for a position at the DNC Headquarters. If you have been involved in local grassroots politics in the last four years, you probably know her. Since we already had the back room reserved, we invited their party to join us. It should be fun to mix with new people or some old friends in a new context.

To those of you who have been asking about guest speakers: we have a couple of people we are inviting for September and October. We are still trying to nail down the dates and we should have a real announcement next week.

There is quite a bit to talk about:

Local

Chris Cannon was fined. If you were wondering how long it takes the FEC to punish someone, we now know. It’s two years after they retire from politics.

The Utah Tea Party Really hates Orin Hatch.

State workers go back to 5 days a week. I am sure they enjoy reordering their families’ lives twice in four years.

National

A storm or something happened on the East Coast. I had a hard time finding any media coverage of it since it has been the lead news story on every national news program every day for the last ten days. But this is cute.

Despite the scheduling controversy, President Obama will be (hopefully) unveiling a new jobs policy on Thursday.

"But could not our situation be compared to one of a menacing epidemic? People are unable to view this situation in its true light, for their eyes are blinded by passion. General fear and anxiety create hatred and aggressiveness. The adaptation to warlike aims and activities has corrupted the mentality of man; as a result,
intelligent, objective and humane thinking has hardly any effect and is even suspected and persecuted as unpatriotic."
