Drinking Liberally tomorrow

It’s nearly that time of the week again, the time when the liberals of Salt Lake gather at the Piper Down to solve world problems. Okay, maybe not solve world problems, but as City Weekly food critic Ted Scheffler put it in his review of America Walks into a Bar: A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops: “Since the earliest days of this country, bars, taverns, saloons, grog shops—whatever you want to call them—have served as centers of political, social and cultural expression, ideas, opinion and organization.”

And this has been something the Drinking Liberally founders in NYC have been saying all along. So come join us this Friday for another round at the Piper Down at 6:30.

And don’t forget to join us November 4th for our Meet the Candidate night. So far we have confirmed the following;

Alan Anderson – Midvale Dist 3
Kyle LaMalfa – SLC Dist 2
Luke Garrott – SLC Dist 4
Charlie Luke – SLC Dist 6
Gary Forbush Sandy At-Large

See you tomorrow night!
Laura, Jeremiah,
Christian, Kelly Jo,
Jason, Casey

Drinking Liberally SLC meets from 6:30-9:30 every every Friday in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 S. State Street).

Drinking Liberally tomorrow with Sen. Ben McAdams!

First, thanks to everyone who came out to support The Muslims Are Coming! comedy tour. The venue was at its 425-person capacity before the first comedian even started, so hopefully all our Drinking Liberals got in. One of the comedians and producers of the tour, Dean Obeidallah, wrote a great article for CNN talking about this whole “Mormonism as a cult” thing: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/12/opinion/obeidallah-mormon-christian/index….

This week we’ve got guest speaker Sen. Ben McAdams joining us to talk about the pending decision on Utah redistricting, his role on the redistricting committee, and what it means to us as liberals in Utah. If you’re on Twitter but don’t follow @BenMcAdams, you should fix that. You’ll be kept up-to-date and entertained. Things like: “Tonight, they ordered pizza for Senators working late on #UTredistricting. I took scissors and cut a circular slice in the middle.”

And here’s Sen. McAdams in action, courtesy of DL member Michael Orton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOeBe8ITOVQ&t=3s

Our guest speaker nights almost always fill up the back room of the Piper Down, so come early if you want a good seat. While you’re waiting, you can talk about Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan, and its striking similarity to the tax plan in the video game SimCity 4. The SimCity game design team decided on the super-simple taxation plan so players can focus on building their cities and thwarting giant lizard attacks. Which makes one wonder, does Herman Cain know something we don’t?

One more thing: we’re inviting all the liberal municipal candidates to come out for a meet & greet on November 4th, so stay tuned for details on that event.

See you tomorrow night, barring any giant lizard attacks.

DL Meetup Tomorrow!

Hello all, we will be having our regularly scheduled meeting tomorrow evening from 6:30-9:30 PM at Piper Down (1492 S. State Street). Senator Ben McAdams has had to reschedule when he will come to talk to us about redistricting and his role on the redistricting committee. However, with the Legislature delaying their vote on the new boundaries, this will give us more time to follow the issue before Ben meets with us. He will now be attending our meeting on October 14th. The Legislature convenes again on the 17th to readdress the redistricting issue so come prepared with tough questions for the Senator!

The comedy show, The Muslims are Coming! featuring Negin Farsad, a comedian from our sister group Laughing Liberally in NYC, will be stopping in Salt Lake this Saturday, October 8th for a FREE standup comedy show. Negin was named One of the 50 Funniest Women by Huffington Post. I have been informed that we have some tickets available. I do not know how many or what the details are so you will have to show up and talk to Laura.

Some interesting news stories:

Redistricting

The GOP started by rejecting the Dems ideas

Dems threatened a lawsuit and the GOP were sure their plan would stand up to scrutiny

Citizens rallied and protested

Then the GOP changed their map to one that had no public input in order to make make the Governor happy

The House and Senate GOP cannot agree on a map so they delayed a vote until the 17th. Dems are still being shutout.

Wall Street Occupation Growing

http://occupywallst.org/

In NY it has grown into the thousands

Washington DC too

Even here we had a few hundred brave the Winter weather to protest
