Drinking Liberally tomorrow

Mark your calendar for next Friday, November 4th, as we’ll have Dr. Tim Chambless of the Political Science Department at the University of Utah:

Let’s have real conversations about the things that really matter!

So bring your questions and join the discussion next week with one of DL’s most popular guest speakers.

Let’s see, what do we have to talk about this week? More media consolidation if AT&T buys Time Warner. The protests in Poland over the efforts of the conservative leaders there to tighten their already restrictive abortion laws. France moving more than 6,000 people (aid groups say it’s more like 8,300 with 1,200 of them being unaccompanied minors) from a makeshift refugee camp called “the jungle”. There was the assault on police cadets in Pakistan that left at least 70 dead and 100 wounded, with ISIS taking credit.

Closer to home, the Bundy brothers were acquitted of federal conspiracy and weapons charges. BYU has offered Honor Code amnesty for anyone reporting sexual assault. This and other changes are due in part to some great reporting that The Salt Lake Tribune has been doing around the uphill battle women on campus have had when reporting sexual assault. Rep Chaffetz, after pulling his endorsement for Trump, has now backtracked and said he’ll still vote for him. Oh, and the LDS church has created https://mormonandgay.lds.org/, with tips for parents of gay and lesbian children, supportive videos and statements from church leaders preaching an approach of love and inclusion. Hooray for steps forward, however small!

See you Friday!

Drinking Liberally Friday October 21st

Drinking Liberals,

Join us this Friday for our regular meetup in our usual spot in the back bar at Piper Down 1492 South State starting at 6pm.

Join me Friday while we unwind from the week and have a few of our favorite beverages and discuss the weeks events. We have a lot to talk about with Wednesday nights 3rd and final presidential debate now behind us and all of the campaigns in the final stretches as we are only 2 and a half weeks away from election night.

Also mark your calendars for November 4th, as we’ll have Dr. Tim Chambless of the Political Science Department at the University of Utah:

Let’s have real conversations about the things that really matter!

Do the debates actually impact voting?
Is Mitt Romney still relevant?
Does Doug Owens have a chance to beat Mia Love?
What will politics look like on Nov 9th?
Anything but Trump. (well maybe a little bit)

So in 2 weeks bring your questions and join the discussion with one of DL’s most popular guest speakers.

See You This Friday Night,
Christian, Jeremiah
Laura, Jason

Drinking Liberally this Friday

First things first: due in part to the busy schedules of our local candidates leading up to the election, we’ve decided to not have our planned candidate night. BUT, mark your calendar for November 4th, as we’ll have Dr. Tim Chambless of the Political Science Department at the University of Utah:

Let’s have real conversations about the things that really matter!

So in 3 weeks bring your questions and join the discussion with one of DL’s most popular guest speakers.

This week we can talk about the news of the week. Like Clinton’s proposal to change the refundability threshold for the child tax credit, therefore helping the very poorest families. Or the presidential polling numbers coming out of Utah showing an even split between Clinton and Trump, with a strong surge by our homegrown candidate, Evan McMullin. Or we can talk local candidates, how we think they’re doing. It’s not long now until the election.

See you Friday!

Drinking Liberally, October, 7th Meetup

Hello everyone!

Join us tomorrow, October 7th, from 6:00-9:00 PM, in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 South State Street) for our regular meetup that may or may not include several drinks. I find a direct correlation between my amount of alcohol consumption and the amount of weekly exposure to Donald Trump related media. What about you?

IN THE NEWS

This week the big news is hurricane Matthew hurricane Matthew predicted to hit about half the eastern seaboard before looping around to hit Florida second time. Gov. Lurch… I mean Rick Scott, wants everyone to know that it has nothing to do with global warming.

Then there is a complete meltdown between U.S. and Russian relations, especially in Syria. Unfortunately there is at least a quarter Million people trapped in Aleppo right now that are kinda relying on some kind of negotiated peace plan in order to live. For more on the topic of Aleppo, check out the documentary titled‘The White Helmets’ ‘The White Helmets’ about a group nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace prize.

Locally the big news is the SLCPD Operation Diversion in the Rio Grande neighborhood. The status quo there is untenable but far-reaching sweeps also have a tendency towards infringing on Civil Liberties. So, let’s keep a close eye on the situation and hope they are being careful!

UPCOMING

Mark your calendar now for Candidate Night on October 28th. Invitations are out; so far Charlene Albarran, 2nd Congressional District has accepted. More to come! We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!
