Drinking Liberally tonight!

We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! And hopefully you managed to stay out of angry fights with your racist uncle. Speaking of, some of you who’ve spent time with family here in the state might be needing some interaction with the community of liberals you’re no doubt more thankful for now. Well you’re in luck, because we’ll be meeting tonight in our usual spot at the Piper Down starting at 6pm. Laura will be bringing some postcards to send to our president-elect. So come join us!

It might be jumping the gun a bit, but I’m already thinking of my resolutions for the new year. Like writing my legislators more, and getting comfortable calling them. A lot. For instance, I’ll be calling and writing Jason Chaffetz to urge him to open an investigation into the unprecedented conflicts of interest the president-elect will be going into the presidency with. DailyKos has a good template letter. Chaffetz certainly knows a thing or two about opening investigations, and he’s claimed he’d go after corruption in either party, so we’ll see how serious he is about this.

See you all tonight!

Drinking Liberally Friday November 18th

Hello,

Join us this Friday for our weekly Friday night meetup in the back bar at Piper Down 1492 S. State St starting at 6pm.

I wish i had something witty and funny to put in this paragraph but i’m still recovering from the election result hangover. The news isn’t helping with the reports of who lord Cheeto is selecting for his cabinet and transition team. Including selecting a white nationalist, claims of creating a muslim registry and honestly so many disheartening things i just can’t list them all right now. We are in for a bumpy ride the next few years that is for sure.

So come down and have a drink or two of whatever your favorite beverage is and unwind while we discuss the weeks events. Especially if your situation is anything like mine and you have to bite your tongue all week.

See you this Friday night,
Christian, Laura,
Jason, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally now more than ever

Well, the most qualified woman in the world lost to the least qualified man in the world. It seems like 2+ decades of attacks on Hillary finally paid off for the right, thanks in no small part (at least recently) to our own Jason Chaffetz. We now have a president-elect Trump thanks to 26% of eligible voters. Michigan appears to have gone to Trump because 110,133 people didn’t vote for anyone for President. Wisconsin went to Trump by just 27,000 votes, thanks in part to the fact that 300,000 people were turned away due to strict voter ID laws (remember, the Voting Rights Act was gutted two years ago).

So what does this mean? It means we’ve got some challenges ahead of us, politically and socially. Based on some reports on social media, it means we’ve got to look out for our fellow citizens (and non-citizens) who are likely targets of hate crimes and report that hate. If you’ve got the means, support the institutions that provide for the common good, like Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, the NAACP and their Legal Defense Fund, Southern Poverty Law Center, and so many more.

And it also means we need Drinking Liberally now more than ever. Besides being a place to commiserate over our defeats, it’s a place to find new energy. To meet other people concerned about the same things you are, and plant the seeds of change.

Join us tomorrow and we can talk more about these federal elections – which get all the attention, but also the state and local elections which often even more important.

Last but not least, thanks to Professor Tim Chambless for coming out to speak to us last week!

See you Friday,
Jeremiah, Laura,
Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally Meetup Friday, November 4th

Join us in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM, tomorrow, Friday November 4th, where we will have Dr. Tim Chambless of the Political Science Department at the University of Utah join us.

Let’s have real conversations about the things that really matter!

Do the debates actually impact voting?
Is Mitt Romney still relevant?
Does Doug Owens have a chance to beat Mia Love?
What will politics look like on Nov 9th?
Anything but Trump. (well maybe a little bit)

So bring your questions and join the discussion!

Mine is going to be, “Trump and Clinton are in a virtual dead heat, less than a week before the election. What the Hell is wrong with people in this country?” Followed by, “Same question only substitute the word ‘Parties’ for ‘people’ in the sentence.”

In the News

This time next week we will have a new President-elect and we will either be celebrating or perhaps, packing our bags. It may be close…I hear Slovenia is nice!

The current President seems to be punting on taking any firm stand in support of the native water protectors at the DAPL.

Our own Rebecca Chavez-Houckreceived an endorsement from one other than President Obama!

Oh yeah, in case you forgot, we are still actively fighting in at least six countries right now. Two American soldiers and at least 26 civilians died in Afghanistan this week.

On that downer, we look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! Come early and secure you seat. Every time we have Dr. Chambliss it is an interesting and informative discussion.
