Drinking Liberally Meetup for December 29th is back on!

Hello everyone!

We know we said that we were going to cancel to meetup this week due to the holidays but several people expressed a desire (and hopefully a commitment) to still get together so Christian and I volunteered to host this fifth Friday meetup. Therefore, please join us tomorrow, Friday December 29th, for our last meetup of 2017, in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM.

There are a few things we can talk about:

Senator Orrin Hatch“Utahn of the Year” is definitely, probably, maybe running for reelection. Or he is thinking about it. Check in next week to see if his decision has changed yet again. In related news, poor “Mittens” Romney just doesn’t know what to do!

Remember how AT&T was going to give employees each $1000 bonus as a direct result of the new tax cuts? Yeah, it turns out that was really the result of a year-long negotiation with the unionsand AT&T is currently laying off hundreds of employees instead. Did someone say MAGA?

And 3.2% beer may be on the way outif brewers stop producing it. The question is will Utah legislators normalize the Utah market or will they have us do without convenient access to purchase beer?

So, please join Christian and Jason to talk about these subjects and more. We hope to see everyone tomorrow evening!

Christian, Jason
Jeremiah, Laura

Drinking Liberally Friday (but not the next)

This Friday, in the spirit of the season, we’ll be playing a game of Santa vs Jesus. Come early so you can pick your winning team! A quick note: we will not be meeting next Friday the 29th

The Grinch came early. The GOP rushed through their tax bill and it’s now waiting for the president to sign. Of course he’s not going to sign it before the new year because then automatic spending cuts to Medicare and other programs will kick in, which the GOP knows won’t be popular in the mid-term election year. So if he signs it after the new year, those cuts won’t happen until 2019. The bill will also get rid of the individual mandate, oh, and even open up oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And of course with that tax bill passed, congress is heading home for the holidays before voting on a DACA fix, putting a number of Dreamers at further risk.

So it seems that in the conservative world, Santa only visits the rich and powerful.

But enough of that. This is the season to be reminded of all the good in the world, and there’s still plenty of that. And many of those good-doers will be at Drinking Liberally tomorrow, so join us starting at 6pm in the back room of the Piper Down!

Drinking Liberally Friday December 15th

Howdy Drinking Liberals,

Join us this Friday for our regularly scheduled meetup in the back bar at Piper Down starting at 6:00pm.

Oh so much to talk about this week with how the Alabama senate race unfolded leading to Doug Jones narrowly winning the seat. The first time a Democrat has won that seat in Alabama since 1992. All it took was for the so called moral majority Republicans to back a pedophile Roy Moore and as of the writing of this email he still refuses to concede. Franken has announced he’s stepping down and the Governor of Minnesota is appointing the Lt. Governor Tina Smith to take his place until a special election next November. Leaving the republicans with just a 51-49 majority until then. Despite a huge public outcry, the FCC voted today to end net nuetrality, something only big corporations actually favored. There is a lot to talk about on that and i would love to hear what you all have to say.

So join us this Friday night starting at 6pm, with your host, me (Christian).

See you then,
Christian, Jason
Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally Friday

Oh boy, where to start this week? I guess we’ll start with the Trump visit this week. He flies in with Hatch and Lee in tow and shrinks two of our national monuments by 2,000,000 acres. Of course this didn’t come out of the blue – people like Rep Bishop have been wanting this for a long time. In Trump they found their “imperfect vessel”, as Steve Bannon has called him.

But there were protests! Boy were there protests. A huge rally last Saturday, and a surprisingly-large-for-a-Monday protest waiting for Air Force One to fly into town. And there are lawsuits. So many lawsuits, you wouldn’t believe it.

Meanwhile, Senator Hatch thinks Trump is the best president ever Of course his judgement can’t be trusted, having written off Roy Moore’s pedophiliac tendencies as having happened “decades ago”. Then a couple days later Hatch said he was “deeply disturbed by the allegations” as if it was new information. I liked Michelle Quist’s commentary on Hatch http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2017/12/07/michelle-quist-orrin…

Then there’s all the more national news we can talk about, including:

LOTS to talk about, so join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6pm!
