Drinking Liberally Friday February 16th

Drinking Liberals,

Thank you to all that came out last week, we had some newcomers and would love to see more come out. Join us again for our regular meetup in the back bar of Piper Down starting at 6pm till 9pm. Remember this is an informal meetup and if you can’t make it at 6 just show up whenever you can.

In the news of things we can discuss is the tragic school shooting in Florida. Something that should unite us to enact change but will instead only lead to divisive debates until everyone forgets about it until the next mass shooting. Then of course we have Lord Cheeto the tweeter in chief, tweeting “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!” So he’s basically blaming neighbors and classmates for the problem and obviously forgetting he signed an order that stripped away an Obama-era order that put in place background checks for those with mental health problems.

Plus Trump wants to replace food stamps with a food box delivery system. Wait What? I seriously do not even know where to begin to wrap my head around that asinine idea. Plus the military parade he wants for himself will cost taxpayers 10-30 million dollars. crazy!

So come down and talk about this and many other current events with this weeks host, me (Christian) on Friday.

See you there,
Christian, Laura
Jeremiah, Jason

Drinking Liberally This Friday February 9th

Drinking Liberals,

We’re back!!! After a week off we will be meeting in the back bar this Friday at Piper Down starting at 6pm till 9 but if you can’t make it at 6 just show up whenever you can and stay for as long or short as you want. We’re a fun group so i’m sure you’ll want to stay.

In the news we have tons to talk about. I just got done reading an article about how the head of the EPA Scott Pruit alluded that global warming may actually be beneficial to humans. Plus the stock market dropped more than 1100 points earlier in the week and Sean Hannity actually blamed Obama for it. The market slowly went up again but as of this writing it’s dropped another 1000 points today. Since taking office Trump has always taken credit for the gains but was silent earlier this week when it dropped. That is until he tweeted Wednesday blaming the losses on his favorite scapegoat, the media.

Plus i am sure there is plenty to talk about with the Utah legislative session. Although honestly i haven’t had much time to keep up with what’s going on. However that’s what i love about our meetups, is gaining info from others on the topics i haven’t followed or haven’t followed much that week. I do know that i haven’t yet seen a bill so wacky that it makes us a laughing stock in the national news. Keyword there is yet. The general session still has a month to go.

So come out and join us, Jason and I (Christian) will be hosting this week.

See you Friday night,
Jason, Christian
Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally tomorrow

Hello Utah liberals,

Well, the Utah legislative session started this week, and they’re already hoping to kill a couple of ballot initiatives that would expand medicaid and help fund schools. https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2018/01/19/ballot-measures-to-hike-…

Speaking of the legislature, the Salt Lake Tribune found that 92% of all campaign donations to the Utah Legislature in 2017 came from special interests. https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2018/01/20/special-interests-gave-u…

After pushing away the Outdoor Retailers convention and supporting the reduction of two national monuments here, our governor is now asking for an appropriation of $22.5 million into the Tourism Marketing Performance Fund https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900008251/utah-governor-to-ask-lawma…

Did anyone see Ruth Bader Ginsburg while she was in town for Sundance? Attend the Respect Rally? Come tell your friends about it at Drinking Liberally this Friday starting at 6pm, in the back room of the Piper Down.

Drinking Liberally Friday January 19th

Howdy Drinking Liberals,

Join us for our regular Friday night meetup in the back bar at Piper Down starting at 6pm. I forgot to type this up earlier and so I’m typing up while mobile on my phone so this email will be short and forgive any mistakes.

As usual we have a lot to discuss, Friday we face a potential government shutdown…again. Trump is of course top of the tabloid news with paying hush money to silence an affair with a pornstar 10+ years ago. Doctors are saying some of his physical results are false, especially his weight. He is trying to legally allow religious descrimination from doctors. We all know he’s going to do more crazy stuff by the time I type this up and you all read it.

Come down Friday night and let’s discuss the weeks events while I sip a drink or two of whatever our favorite beverage is.

See you tomorrow night,
Christian, Laura,
Jason, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally Friday

Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes has said he won’t seek re-election at the end of his term, so he may run for governor or congress, or go to work in the White House. https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2018/01/10/utah-house-speaker-greg-…

I don’t know about you guys, but this analysis on the Fusion GPS transcript that Sen Diane Feinstein released is the craziest thing I’ve read in a long time: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/950884746082562048.html Of course I haven’t read (the now NYT bestseller) Fire and Fury yet.

Come spend some “Executive Time” with your stable genius friends at the Piper Down tomorrow starting at 6!

Drinking Liberally Meetup January 5th

Hello everyone!

Please join us tomorrow, Friday January 5th, for our first meetup of 2018, in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM. Last week we had a pretty good turnout with several first time attendees. Let’s keep the ball rolling into 2018!

There are a few things we can talk about:

While most of the rest of the country is experiencing extreme weather events, we are in the middle of another multi-day inversion and a Winter with very little snowfall. If anyone ever gets the chance to explain climate change to the President this article may help him understand that this too is a result of global warming.

Speaking of the President, the bromance with Steve Bannon seems to be over. While the President is trying to issue a cease and desist, the tell-all book’s publisher is moving up the publication date. I think the entire staff needs to strap on a helmet for this one!

Of local significance, the Crypt Keeper…I mean Orin Hatch has decided not to run for re-election! So of course Mittens Romney is scrambling to change his residency status from Massachusetts to Utah as fast as possible and it looks like the seat is his, if he wants it. (Sorry Jenny!)

Join your host, Jason, this week to discuss these topics and whatever else comes up. We look forward to seeing everyone there tomorrow evening!

Drinking Liberally Meetup for December 29th is back on!

Hello everyone!

We know we said that we were going to cancel to meetup this week due to the holidays but several people expressed a desire (and hopefully a commitment) to still get together so Christian and I volunteered to host this fifth Friday meetup. Therefore, please join us tomorrow, Friday December 29th, for our last meetup of 2017, in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM.

There are a few things we can talk about:

Senator Orrin Hatch“Utahn of the Year” is definitely, probably, maybe running for reelection. Or he is thinking about it. Check in next week to see if his decision has changed yet again. In related news, poor “Mittens” Romney just doesn’t know what to do!

Remember how AT&T was going to give employees each $1000 bonus as a direct result of the new tax cuts? Yeah, it turns out that was really the result of a year-long negotiation with the unionsand AT&T is currently laying off hundreds of employees instead. Did someone say MAGA?

And 3.2% beer may be on the way outif brewers stop producing it. The question is will Utah legislators normalize the Utah market or will they have us do without convenient access to purchase beer?

So, please join Christian and Jason to talk about these subjects and more. We hope to see everyone tomorrow evening!

Jeremiah, Laura

Drinking Liberally Friday (but not the next)

This Friday, in the spirit of the season, we’ll be playing a game of Santa vs Jesus. Come early so you can pick your winning team! A quick note: we will not be meeting next Friday the 29th

The Grinch came early. The GOP rushed through their tax bill and it’s now waiting for the president to sign. Of course he’s not going to sign it before the new year because then automatic spending cuts to Medicare and other programs will kick in, which the GOP knows won’t be popular in the mid-term election year. So if he signs it after the new year, those cuts won’t happen until 2019. The bill will also get rid of the individual mandate, oh, and even open up oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And of course with that tax bill passed, congress is heading home for the holidays before voting on a DACA fix, putting a number of Dreamers at further risk.

So it seems that in the conservative world, Santa only visits the rich and powerful.

But enough of that. This is the season to be reminded of all the good in the world, and there’s still plenty of that. And many of those good-doers will be at Drinking Liberally tomorrow, so join us starting at 6pm in the back room of the Piper Down!

Drinking Liberally Friday December 15th

Howdy Drinking Liberals,

Join us this Friday for our regularly scheduled meetup in the back bar at Piper Down starting at 6:00pm.

Oh so much to talk about this week with how the Alabama senate race unfolded leading to Doug Jones narrowly winning the seat. The first time a Democrat has won that seat in Alabama since 1992. All it took was for the so called moral majority Republicans to back a pedophile Roy Moore and as of the writing of this email he still refuses to concede. Franken has announced he’s stepping down and the Governor of Minnesota is appointing the Lt. Governor Tina Smith to take his place until a special election next November. Leaving the republicans with just a 51-49 majority until then. Despite a huge public outcry, the FCC voted today to end net nuetrality, something only big corporations actually favored. There is a lot to talk about on that and i would love to hear what you all have to say.

So join us this Friday night starting at 6pm, with your host, me (Christian).

See you then,
Christian, Jason
Laura, Jeremiah
