Drinking Liberally, December 19th

Join us tomorrow, December 19th, for our regularly scheduled meetup. As usual we will be in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State St.) from 6:30-9:30 PM.

Coming up soon we will get back to having a few guest speakers. Keep January 23rd in mind, we will be doing interactive political improv with Quick Wits.

In the news

The Utah State Prison relocation is becoming a fiasco. While all the developers and their buddies in the Utah legislature were busy salivating over the value of the land under the current prison, they neglected to consider that no one wants a new prison in their neighborhood.

After more than 50 years of sanctions, the United States and Cuba are going to normalize diplomatic relations. What does this mean? Not to be too cynical but I think this means the Democrats are conceding the Cuban American vote in Florida to the GOP and now, unburdened by that special interest group, are shedding ridiculous Cold War policies.

In the most bizarre set of circumstances, North Korea seems to have threatened to go to war with Sony Studios over the terrible looking Seth Rogan/James Franco comedy “The Interview” North Korea may be behind the massive hack of the movie company’s computer system too. Sony has backed down and shelved the movie.

and finally…

Most Americans are okay with torture. Go Freedom!!! While very disturbing, I am afraid to find out if the people who support this gross violation of Human Rights are aware that 25% of the people we detained during the “Global War on Terror” were innocent, falsely accused or just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dick Cheney doesn’t mind.

We look forward to talking about this and other things tomorrow at Piper Down. We hope to see you there!

Drinking Liberally Dec. 5th

Join us tomorrow, Friday December 5th, for our regular DL gathering in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30-9:30 PM.

This week we can talk about the 2015 Salt Lake City Mayor’s race. So far we have Ralph Becker running for a third term and City Councilman Luke Garrott in the race (both past DL guests) with former State Representative Jackie Biskupski and former Mayor Rocky Anderson both looking at getting in too. Throw in the eventual GOP candidate(s) and we may have a wild election season ahead of us.

We can also talk about the proposed locations for the new prison.

But, perhaps this week’s biggest discussion topic is the protests following the one-two gut punch of the grand juries failing to indict white police officers in the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri and Eric Gardner in New York. Jon Stewert may have said it best on The Daily Show:

Weekly DL Reminder

Join us tomorrow, Friday November 21st for our regular DL gathering in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street)from 6:30-9:30 PM.

We can talk about the surprise loss of three House seats for the Utah Democrats after all the election results were counted. Now the GOP super-majority just got more super. Or would you say, more major?

Or we could talk about the President’s speech tonight promising an executive order on immigration reform. The President just spent 15 minutes saying “If Congress had done their job, I wouldn’t have to do this!” Then conservative heads around the country exploded as if Millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, “Amnesty!”. Expect to hear talk in the coming days of imperial Obama ruling by fiat and death panels and ebola and socialism!

Then there is John Swallow getting his own trial, separate from Shurtleff but now charged with another felony.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening!

Drinking a little more Liberally again this Friday

It’s Drinking Liberally time again! Maybe with a little more drinking after the election last week. Speaking of the election, I wanted to share a note from the Living Liberally national leaders sent to all DL hosts across the nation last week.

No dount that Tuesday was a rough night. Even though we’re not an endorsing organization, we know that liberals took knocks this election. Thousands of our members poured time and energy into local campaigns and hopefully, you all found some bright spots amidst the conservative electoral tide we all experienced.

You may be mired in campaign debriefs or notes from different activist groups or finger-pointing among the pundits. But we just want to send one simple message to you all — and, through you, to all your members.

Drinking Liberally is here for you.

In a way, this is what we’re here for: to be an ongoing community after election day. Win or lose, post-election is always a time when liberals need to come together — whether to wash away our sorrows, toast our victories, or scheme for the years to come.

While campaign offices close up shop, grassroots groups take a break, and folks argue about what went wrong, thank goodness you have a safe place to go — to talk, to share, to vent, to laugh and to remain connected to a community of shared values.

We’ve been here before. We were here in 2004 when President Bush beat John Kerry. We were here in 2010, when the Tea Party swept into power. We’re here now…and we’re not going away.

Cheers,
– Justin, Katrina, Matt and the whole Liberally Gang

So join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down, as always.

DL Meetup, or should we call it a wake?

It’s time once again for Drinking Liberally and boy do we need it! Join us this Friday at 6:30 PM in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 S. State St.), where we will talk about the issues of the week.

Though, is there anything but the election we really want to talk about? Is Obama to blame or was it Democratic candidates trying to distance themselves from Obama?

Personally, I think Democrats across the country ran on platforms distancing themselves from the President and the ACA. They failed to call out their opponents on six years of obstructive behavior and tried to out conservative their opponents. Instead they ignored their own issues and let the Republicans run with the narrative that all government disfunction is Harry Reid, the President and Nancy Pelosi’s fault. The results are what we saw Tuesday.

If Democrats do not present a clear center – left choice for voters, why will liberals want to vote for them? The lesser of two evils argument does not get out the vote!

Luckily this is a midterm before a big Presidential race. I suspect GOP factions will squander their majority and will end up sniping each other over getting their Party’s presidential nomination. After 2 more years of failure to achieve anything, 2016 will be an overcorrection in favor of the Dems. What do you think?

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Tomorrow’s DL Agenda

Join us tomorrow evening, Friday, October 17th, for our regularly scheduled gathering in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 S. State St.) we will be there from 6:30-9:30 PM.

Save the date for the Drinking Liberally candidate night coming up next week on October 24th. We’re still confirming candidates so it will be a surprise!

NEWS to Discuss

This week, Utah made national news again when outspoken feminist and gamer status quo adversary, Anita Sarkeesian, had to cancel a scheduled speaking engagement at USU amid detailed threats of mass-murder. She didn’t want guns allowed into the venue seeing as how she was just threatened with murder by someone claiming to possess multiple firearms. But Utah law explicitly forbids a University from restricting guns on campus. Our Utah Legislator, Curt Oda, believes Sarkeesian is “overreacting” and he defends our current laws. I guess not everyone can be as tough as Curt is when he deals with frequent threats to rape and murder him.

If you want to learn more about these losers campaigning against feminism in games read here, if you wish to see misogyny flourishing in anonymity, read any comments section on any of these linked articles.

In other news, the Dems actually got a bit uncharacteristically tough in this campaign ad essentially blaming Republicans for Ebola. What do you think about it?

In Syria, we are bombing ISIS in Kobani, while our allies bomb our other allies who are some of the only people willing to fight ISIS on the ground. Simple, right?

On that note, Keep an eye out for our guest speakers next week. With the midterm elections looming we are looking forward to getting a few more candidates to join us! We hope to seeing everyone tomorrow!
