DL Guest Speaker this Friday

Fresh on the heels of the Stand with Planned Parenthood rally at the capitol on Tuesday, Emily Andrews of Planned Parenthood will be our guest speaker tomorrow night! Join us and hear what Governor Herbert’s executive order to cut off federal funding for Planned Parenthood means to citizens of Utah, and what you can do to help.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight (or any Thursday through Oct 8th), The Nation magazine is celebrating 150 years and they’re putting on a speaker series at the downtown library. Tonight’s topic is the environment, and will feature The Nation’s enivronmental correspondent, Mark Hertsgaard. Mark’s latest book is “HOT: Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth”. Info on the City Library website. Apropos to our discussion tomorrow, in two weeks the topic at The Nation speaker series will be reproductive rights.

See you tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally Meetup, August 21st

Hello everyone!

We will be having our regular gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:00-9:00PM tomorrow, Friday, August 21st.

Next week Emily Andrews, Communications and Marketing Coordinator at Planned Parenthood, will join us in order to discuss what’s happening with Gov. Herbert’s executive order to withhold funding from Planned Parenthood, and what supporters can do to counter Herbert’s actions.

This week we have a lot to drink about! From the Planned Parenthood controversy to the SLC prison location to Donald Trump’s poll numbers to Hillary Clinton’s ongoing email scandal, this has been a demoralizing week for liberals.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally tomorrow

It’s time for another round of Drinking Liberally! Join us as we talk about the primary election, which thanks to vote-by-mail ballots, had a 40% participation rate amongst registered voters in Salt Lake. If we had 40% of Drinking Liberally members show up at a Drinking Liberally meeting, we’d exceed the maximum capacity of our space in the back room of the Piper Down 4 times over!

Besides mayoral and city council elections, we can talk about national issues like the demonstrations against race-fueled deaths in police custody that are happening in Ferguson. We could talk about the political theater that is the 1st republican debate, and the continuing Trump hostility toward Megyn Kelly.

We can talk about the mine water breach by the EPA that has turned the Animas river orange, and how the EPA was just cleaning up after private companies who’ve already made their money and ran. We could talk about the irony of how offended the anti-political correctness crowd gets when a company makes a decision they don’t agree with. Or we could even talk about the final episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Whatever you want to talk about, you’re sure to have someone to talk about it with at Drinking Liberally. So join us tomorrow beginning at 6PM!

See you tomorrow!

Christian, Jason

DL Meetup, August 7th

Hello everyone!

This is just a quick reminder that we wil be having our regularly scheduled meetup tomorrow, Friday, August 7th, in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State St.) from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

Hopefully everyone who joined us last week at Saturday’s Voyeur enjoyed themselves! Those who came by Piper Down had a fun time too! And thanks to Laura, we all have the Bingo cards for the GOP debate this evening! We will give them a try and see if they will be conducive for a group activity a debate a little further down the road when the clown car gets a bit smaller. Enjoy the debate tonight and them clear the palate by watching Jon Stewart’s last episode hosting The Daily Show. I am sure both will provide us with ample conversation topics.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Saturday’s Voyeur & DL Meetup

Hello everyone!

Tomorrow we have our annual group outing to attend Saturday’s Voyeur. For everyone who has bought their tickets, DL will have a group party in the green room before the show, beginning at 6:30 PM. Laura will bring some snacks, drinks and party favors but please treat this as a pot luck. Feel free to bring your own contributions to the food, liquor and party supply. The more, the merrier!

We will still have a host at our regular time and location 6:00 PM at Piper Down for those not attending Saturday’s Voyeur, in case you dislike change to the routine or if you are looking for an excuse to do something. Please drop by! A few weeks ago almost no one showed up and it got pretty boring for me and the wait staff.

In the News

Locally, in Big Cottonwood Canyon a developer neglected to get the proper permits before hiring a sub-contractor to cut down 40 trees. They walked the sub-contractor through the site, pointing out the 40 trees they wanted removed (but had neglected to get a permit for) then the contractor erroneously cut down more than double the number of trees they were contracted and paid for. When was the last time you ever heard of a contractor doing twice as much work as they bid on?

In national news, Cincinnati police officer, Ray Tensing, was indicted by a grand jury for the murder of an unarmed black motorist last month.

In world news, Turkey has begun airstrikes against ISIS (our enemy) and Kurdish forces (our allies) in Northern Iraq and Syria. For anyone still trying to understand the conflicts in the Middle East, this is more convoluted than the Battle of Five Armies in the Hobbit. For the sake of brevity, ask me about the issue at one of our meetups and I will try my best to outline who is fighting whom, where and why.

Drinking Liberally on Pie and Beer Day

We’d like to thank Jackie Biskupski for coming out to talk with us last week! I (Jeremiah) wasn’t able to be there, but it looks like it was a packed house and I’m sure it was interesting.

I wasn’t there because I was in Phoenix for the Netroots Nation conference (where I ran into SLC DL’er Jenn!). Netroots is always interesting, but this year seemed especially so. On Friday morning we had an rousing keynote by Elizabeth Warren. Almost immediately afterward hundreds of us marched in protest of racist Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Sheriff Joe had a helicopter hovering over us, likely for intimidation. There were counter protestors yelling racist things about immigrants, but our organizers were used to this and kept us walking right past them without incident.

But the real excitement came on Saturday during the Democratic Presidential candidate town hall. Martin O’Malley was on stage before Bernie Sanders, and not long into O’Malley’s Q&A, a line of demonstrators started marching toward the stage and chanting. I was on the opposite side of the room from the demonstrators, so it was unclear at first what it was about, but soon it became very clear: Black Lives Matter. It was a pretty powerful demonstration, and it was clear that both candidates were caught off guard – which is surprising if you’ve been following the media lately, especially the Sandra Bland case recently.

Anyway, join us tonight for our Pie and Beer Day edition where we celebrate Utah’s long history with beer. Piper Down of course has beer, and they also have a Shepherd’s Pie. It’s really just our regular meetup though.

Next Friday we’ll be doing our annual group trip to see Saturday’s Voyeur. If you’ve got your tickets, join us in the greenroom an hour before the show at 6:30.

Drinking Liberally with the Mayor!

Join us this tomorrow when we’ll have Salt Lake City mayor Ralph Becker out as our guest speaker. Our room in the back of Piper Down will likely get pretty packed, so it’d be wise to get there early. We’ll be there starting at 6, with the mayor speaking a little bit later.

The rest of the month is pretty busy for us too, with Jackie Biskupski joining us next week (July 17th) as another candidate for SLC mayor.

The next week, July 24th, we’re not doing anything special but it *will* be Pie & Beer day, the day when the whole state celebrates the journey of our forefather and foremother, Pie and Beer, across the rough American west. Pretty sure that’s how the story goes. Anyway, why not spend the holiday with us?

And then on the last Friday of July, we’ll be doing our annual group trip to see Saturday’s Voyeur. If you’ve got your tickets, join us in the green room an hour before the show at 6:30. It’ll be great.

See you tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally RESCHEDULED with Jackie Biskupski

Hi all,

Due to the historic Supreme Court decision this morning making same-sex marriage the law of the land!!!, Jackie Biskupski has asked if we could reschedule her appearance tonight, and we don’t blame her.

We’ll still be holding our Drinking Liberally meeting, it just won’t be with a guest speaker. We’ll keep you posted on details once we’ve rescheduled with Jackie.

Your hosts,
