Drinking Liberally This Friday 04/17 At Piper Down

Greetings Liberal Drinkers,

Join us tomorrow night for a pint or two for our regular Friday night meetup in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 s State St) from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.

We have some fun stuff coming up this summer, starting with a Friends With Benefits night in towards the end of May. Its not what you think so get your minds out of the gutter. More on that to be announced soon!

We have plenty to talk about tomorrow, we can start with what we all knew would happen like Hillary Clinton announcing her candidacy> and it took no time for the likes of Rush Limbaugh to make up stuff to try to slander her name and say that she doesn’t tip at Chipolte Who does? And USAtoday shows that the manager didn’t even know she was there. I just think that it is funny that the petty stuff is starting already. I mean really it’s always happening but this one just make me laugh. Just goes to show that we are in for some fun stuff in the upcoming 18 months leading up the next presidential election.

So come on down and have a drink and chit chat with us about whatever political is on your mind.

See you tomorrow night,
Christian, Laura,
Jason, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally tomorrow night

Thanks to Kevin Leecaster and Citizens Climate Lobby for coming out to speak with us last week!

This week will be back in the back room of the Piper Down from 6:00 to 9:00 talking about current events like the the horrible murder of an unarmed black man by a police officer in South Carolina. Or maybe if that gets too depressing, we can talk about Rand Paul throwing his hat into the ring. Or you know, whatever is on your mind!

See you Friday at 6!

DL Tomorrow W/Citizens Climate Lobby

Hello everyone! We will be having our regular gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:00-9:00PM tomorrow, Friday, April 3rd.

Hopefully a few of our members got to see the President during his first visit to Utah since he was elected. If the trip to SLC had not been so last minute, we could have invited the President to attend our meeting!

We will have Kevin Leecaster, environmental scientist and volunteer with with Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-partisan grassroots organization seeking an effective solution to address climate change that will put us on a path to a more sustainable energy economy. Kevin will talk to us about a few substantive things that can be done. Make sure to ask Kevin about his recent meeting with Senator Mike Lee!

From Kevin:

“I hope you can come on April 3rd to learn more about Citizens Climate Lobby for a short discussion and longer question and answer session as we hope to gain more support to help sway our legislators all around the country during this important #PathwayToParis year in which we need to build the political will to create a concrete global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

We hope to see you tomorrow starting at 6:00!

Drinking Liberally tomorrow night

Join us in the back room of the Piper Down this Friday for another round of Drinking Liberally! We’ll be there from 6:00 to about 8:30pm.

It seems like presidential election season has started, and since we’ll be hearing about that ad nauseam for the foreseeable future, we don’t have to talk about it yet. But come on, how bad for America would Ted Cruz be with more power?

Locally, the Salt Lake City mayor’s race is also heating up with plenty of good potential candidates. Statewide, Utah officially has a firing squad alternative for executions again, which made news all over the world. If you can remember the last time Utah made worldwide news for something great, please, come share it with the group!

On April 3rd we will have Kevin Leecaster, environmental scientist and volunteer with with Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-partisan grassroots organization seeking an effective solution to address climate change that will put us on a path to a more sustainable energy economy. Drinking Liberally Friday March 20th

Hello Liberal Drinkers,

Join us tomorrow for our regular Friday night meetup at Piper Down 1492 S. State St. please note that our meeting time has changed, going forward we will start earlier at 6:00pm and ending earlier at 8:30pm.

We would like to thank Maryann Martindale of Alliance for a Better Utah for coming out last week to speak. We hope everyone had a good time.

We’ve got plenty to talk about this week, in Israel, Netanyahu took a page from our own fearmongering tactics to pull off an unexpected win. Prompting Obama to reaffirm in a phone call that the United States is committed to a two state solution and now Netanyahu has suddenly back offed his fearmongering for a minute and is back tracking on what he said leading up to election day.

The republicans can’t seem to play nice with each and come to agreements on a budget (big surprise) and are attacking their own. The infighting just makes me want to grab some popcorn and enjoy the entertainment for a bit.

So come on down and share a pint or two with me and don’t forget to set a reminder for yourself about our new times.

See you tomorrow night,
Christian, Laura
Jeremiah, Jason

Drinking Liberally with Maryann Martindale

Hello liberals, it’s time for another round of Drinking Liberally! This week we’ve got Maryann Martindale from the Alliance for a Better Utah coming out to give us a recap of this year’s legislative session. Join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6:30.

A lot of things pissed us off this week, and here’s a few:
Republicans writing letters to Iran, undermining Obama’s nuclear discussions, Wisconsin and Scott Walker’s right-to-work law,
Lindsey Graham saying he’d deploy the military against congress until his they vote for his agenda, the racist frat boys in Oklahoma, and the (likely) racists who killed a man who had fled to the US to avoid ISIS in Iraq.

There were some items from the last week in the Utah legislature too, but we’ll let Maryann discuss those.

See you tomorrow at 6:30!

Christian, Jason

Drinking Liberally Updates & Mtg. Reminder

Hello everyone! We will be having our regular gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30-9:30PM tomorrow, Friday, March 6th.

We are going to have some guest speakers in the coming weeks. First, on March 13th we’ll have guest speaker Maryann Martindale of Alliance for a Better Utah out to give us a legislative session wrap up.

Then on April 3rd we will have Kevin Leecaster, environmental scientist and volunteer with with Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-partisan grassroots organization seeking an effective solution to address climate change that will put us on a path to a more sustainable energy economy. Kevin will talk to us about a few substantive things that can be done.

Some possible discussion topics for tomorrow

While it looks like Governor Herbert’s plan for Medicaid expansion called Healthy Utah, is now dead in the Utah legislatur, the compromise non-discrimination/religious freedom bill is on the fast track to be passed this legislative session.

The Israeli Prime Minister addressed a joint session of congress where he proceeded to tell us our President is wrong and what we really need to do with our foreign policy concerning Iran is to stop negotiating and get tough.

Russian opposition leader and outspoken critic of Vladamir Puti, Boris Nemtsov was assassinated right outside the Kremlin. But don’t worry, Putin is going to personally oveersee the investigation.

Drinking Liberally this Friday

It’s time once again for Drinking Liberally! We’ll be gathering around the back room of the Piper Down starting around 6:30. Plenty to talk about again this week, including the upcoming Netanyahu visit, the FCC voting to implement net neutrality rules!, the GOP’s renewed efforts to repeal banking reforms, the GOP’s continual roadblocking of Obama’s Attorney General nomination, and Healthy Utah.

Oh, or the fact that a Republican legislator introduced a bill that would make medical marijuana legal here. Of course I think it’s unlikely to pass, but if it did anyone who can prove they’ve got at least three quarters of a million dollars in assets could conceivably make a killing selling it. And is it funny to anyone else that while it’s being discussed on Utah’s capitol hill, Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz is threatening retribution for the people pushing for legalization in the nation’s capitol?

In two weeks, on March 13th we’ll have guest speaker (and dark money bully) Maryann Martindale from the Alliance for a Better Utah out to give us a legislative recap. So put it on your your calendars.

See you tomorrow night!

Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally loves America

Hello fellow liberals,

Join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down for another round of Drinking Liberally!

This week we can talk about the Texas judge who’s blocking Obama’s compassionate immigration policy. Or the Alabama supreme court justice who’s hinting at having his court abolish all marriages if same sex marriage is permitted to stand. Where are all those anti-legislating-from-the-bench people when you need them?

Or there’s Rudolph Giuliani who says that Obama doesn’t love America. Are you kidding me? You don’t run for the hardest job in the world (twice!), with a congress that doesn’t let you get anything done, just for the benefit of letting some self-righteous asshat tell you that you don’t love the country you’re working so hard for.

Locally, the commemorative legislative firearm has been blessed, bloviating is under way, and we’ve made it past the halfway mark of the legislative session. On March 13th we’ll have guest speaker Maryann Martindale of Alliance for a Better Utah out to give us a legislative update.

See you tomorrow night!

DL Meetup Tonight, February 13th

Sorry for the late reminder email. Yesterday was my Birthday and I had family in town so I was unable to get to it last night.

We will be having our regular gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30-9:30PM tonight, Friday, February 13th.

Some possible discussion topics:

The President seems to be on a roll lately with his more agressive and challenging demeanor. He brought up the Christian history of violent persecution at a prayer breakfast and he threw the ball concerning the authorization to fight the Islamic State back to the Legislative Branch, essentially telling Congress to put up or shut up.

In gay marriage news, Alabama, led by their State’s Supreme Court Chief Justice, seem determined to relive the most embarrassing and shameful moments of their own civil rights history by refusing the Federal Courts’ orders to start issuing marriage licences to gay couples.

In local news, there is plenty of things going on at the legislative session. Hopefully we will have a few insiders show up tonight to give us the juicy, behind the scenes details.

And finally, in tragic news, after 16 years, Jon Stewart will be leaving The Daily Show sometime this year. His legacy, in my opinion, will be that he revolutionized how we get our news. He provided some of the most biting and insightful social commentary and media criticism through a satirical lens that somehow made the information he delivered seem more truthful and sincere than that provided by corporate mainstream media.

Anyway, we look forward to seeing everyone tonight!
