Drinking Liberally and the Tribune

The week is winding down, and that means it’s time to start Drinking Liberally! And that’ll go double for the 8 people the Salt Lake Tribune laid off today. We’ll be welcoming them at Drinking Liberally again, so it’s your chance (once again) to come out and buy a drink for those who now have an uncertain future.

I’m sure we’ll talk about less depressing things too! Join us in the back room of the Piper Down from 6:30 to 9:30.

Jason, Casey,
Christian, Kelly Jo

Drinking Liberally Tomorrow

Hello!

Join us tomorrow evening, Friday, April 4th for our regularly scheduled gathering in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 S. State St.) we will be there from 6:30-9:30 PM.

Hopefully everyone attended their neighborhood caucus meetings and some got elected to be delegates or precinct officers with the task of organizing their neighborhoods. If so I expect you need a drink or two to unwind from the barrage of candidates calling you, knocking on your door and spamming your inbox. Just over one week to go to Convention then it will all be over. No it won’t. I just wanted to give you a little glimmer of hope. This will continue until November.

If you didn’t get elected, come join us and join the conversation about how thanks to the SCOTUS ruling on Wednesday individuals have no limits on how much money they can donate to political campaigns. So, we are well on the way to having no campaign finance laws at all! Democracy was fun while it lasted!

Anyway, we hope you will all join us!

Drinking Liberally Friday

It’s time for another round of Drinking Liberally! Join us this (and every) Friday in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 S State) beginning at 6:30.

The big news in local Democratic circles this week is the resignation of Jim Dabakis as the chairman of the Utah Democratic Party. Of course he’ll continue to be a state senator, but he’ll be missed at Democratic party HQ. There’s plenty of other stuff to talk about too, so join us!

Belated DL Reminder

Hello!

Join us this evening, Friday, March 21st (yeah, this is a late reminder. It’s been a busy week) for our regularly scheduled gathering in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 S. State St.) we will be there from 6:30-9:30 PM.

Hopefully everyone attended their neighborhood caucus meetings and some got elected to be delegates or precinct officers with the task of organizing their neighborhoods.

The Democratic Party has not released the information from caucus night yet so this is the calm before the storm. With three weeks until SL County convention, I expect candidates will begin lining up to knock on your door and your phone will be ringing off the hook if you are a delegate.

We hope you will all join us!

Drinking Liberally Friday

Well, tonight is the last night of the Utah legislative session. That means we’ll have plenty to talk about when we meet tomorrow (Friday) night in the back room of the Piper Down! We won’t go over the details here, because you’ve probably been following along at Utah Political Capitol, or your favorite twitter feed newspaper reporters.

Instead, in this email we’ll talk about Drinking Liberally news. Like how our very own host, Jason Wessel, is running for House District 23! While we’re sad to see Jennifer Seelig go, it would be great to see Jason take her spot.

In other news, former Salt Lake rabble-rouser Melodía Gutiérrez is getting ready to start a Drinking Liberally chapter in her new home of Lubbock, TX! Go Melodía!

Ok, that’s about it for now. Come join us this Friday for another round of Drinking Liberally!

Drinking Liberally Time of the Week

Hello Liberal Drinkers!

Join us Friday night in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 South, State St.) starting at 6:30 PM as usual.

With the legislative session wrapping up next week things are getting pretty crazy, so there’s plenty to talk about. Including the revived attempt to place breathalyzers in bars.

“…and requires calibration every 30 days or after 300 uses.”

I predict no bar will want to deal with this. 300 uses could be one busy weekend if groups of people turn the machine into a drinking game. Which happens in every bar I have ever seen one of these installed in.

Then there is the last minute redirection of education funding away from schools and teachers into Speaker Lockhart’s pet tablet project.

The neighborhood caucuses are coming up soon on March 18th (for the Dems), so plan on learning a little more about the candidates and attend your neighborhood meeting.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Christian, Kelly Jo

Hello, fellow liberals!

First off, many thanks to the Salt Lake county candidates who joined us last week: Sim Gill, Jeff Hatch, Chris Stout, Mary Bishop, Mike Fife, Jenny Wilson, and Arlyn Bradshaw. It was a great night, and hopefully it inspired you all to attend the neighborhood caucuses on Tuesday, March 18th. And thanks to Stabby and Piper Down for keeping us hydrated.

This Friday we’ll back for our standard-issue meet up to talk about all the current issues on the hill and everywhere else. Join us from 6:30 to 9:30 in the back room of the Piper Down. What’s on your mind? Come on down to Drinking Liberally and share it with us!

See you tomorrow!

Candidates Night at DL!

Hello All!

We have a very special Drinking Liberally meet up this week. We will be meeting at our regular location in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30 PM until 9:30 PM. What makes this meet up special is Laura has managed to gather a laundry list of Salt Lake County candidates running for election this year. We will have the following candidates join us:

County DA – Sim Gill
County Clerk – Sherrie Swensen
County Sheriff- Jim Winder
County Auditor- Jeff Hatch
County Auditor -Chris Stout
County Recorder – Mary Bishop
County Treasurer – Mike Fife
County Co At Large – Jenny Wilson
County Council 1 – Arlyn Bradshaw

I know it seems like we just had an election but the Democratic caucus meetings are coming up March 18th with the County convention following on April 12th where these candidates will be seeking their Party’s nomination. Now is the time for all of us to meet the candidates and ask them the tough progressive questions before they start campaigning to a larger, wider audience.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Laura, Jeremiah,
Jason, Casey

V-Day Drinking Liberally

It’s time to Drink Liberally once again. Join us Friday night in the back room of the Piper Down (starting at 6:30) as always.

With the legislative session in swing, there?s plenty to talk about. Including the 13 LGBT demonstrators who were arrested after blocking the governor’s door at the capitol after a senate shutdown of a bill that would make it illegal to fire or evict someone because they’re gay or transgender.

In other news, Jeremiah represented Drinking Liberally in the annual City Weekly City Guide. The City Guide is targeted at newcomers to the city, and what better way for someone to be introduced to the city than to eat, drink, and laugh with Utah liberals they didn?t even know existed?

So grab your valentine (or who knows, maybe come meet your next valentine) and join us for Drinking Liberally. And let’s hope that Piper Down has the new Wasatch beer created to recognize same-sex marriage, Live and Let Live!

See you tomorrow!
