Drinking liberally after a crazy week

Wow, what a week! Where to start? Let’s start with some thing light. Do you remember when Utah had a Porn Czar? Well now we’ve got a Porn Dog!

What else? Oh, Iraq has said they’ve taken back control of Fallujah from ISIL. Good news for Iraq. Venezuela could also use some good news, but unfortunately they continues to be in a really bad way.

Then there’s the Brexit. Results are still coming in as I type this, but right now it’s looking like the British Trump-types are winning their bid for leaving the EU. Speaking of Trump, he fired his reporter-assaulting campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, but it looks like CNN has already given him a job as one of their talking heads.

The Supreme Court ruled on Utah vs Strieff, which effectively ruled that evidence of a crime can still be used in some cases even if that evidence was obtained illegally. That’s bad news for civil rights. But Justice Sonia Sotomayor had a great dissent: “By legitimizing the conduct that produces this double consciousness, this case tells everyone, white and black, guilty and innocent, that an officer can verify your legal status at any time. It says that your body is subject to invasion while courts excuse the violation of your rights. It implies that you are not a citizen of a democracy but the subject of a carceral state, just waiting to be cataloged. We must not pretend that the countless people who are routinely targeted by police are ‘isolated.’ They are the canaries in the coal mine whose deaths, civil and literal, warn us that no one can breathe in this atmosphere. They are the ones who recognize that unlawful police stops corrode all our civil liberties and threaten all our lives. Until their voices matter too, our justice system will continue to be anything but. I dissent.”

Drinking Liberally Friday June 17th

Howdy Drinking Liberals,

Join us tomorrow evening for our regular Friday night meetup at our usual watering hole in the back bar at Piper Down 1492 S. State St starting at 6pm to 8:30.

It’s been an emotional week after the shooting in Orlando, that has heated up many debates from guns, Islamic radicalism, to homophobia and everything in-between. Senate Dems in response engaged in a 15 hour filibuster until a promise was made to get a vote on some gun control measures. The senate just voted to include women in the draft. Clinton just got endorsements from big unions like the AFL-CIO and even Oprah. Trump keeps opening his mouth and spewing nonsense while his approval ratings keep dropping. The lead up to what will happen at the national conventions for both parties is shaping up to be very interesting. So come down and lets unwind from the week and talk while we sip a drink or two of our favorite beverage.

Don’t forget to save the date, our annual Saturday’s Voyeur outing has been reserved for July 22nd. We will have ticket reservation information very soon, so keep an eye on future emails.

See you Friday night,
Christian, Jason
Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally this Friday

Join us in the back room of the Piper Down tomorrow for our regular meeting, where we can talk about all the big news of the day. This week Hillary became the presumptive nominee, and with that designation has been endorsed by Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren. Now she’s just got to hit it home in the general election. I have to believe that if Trump keeps opening his mouth – and why wouldn’t he, he’s a narcissist – it’ll be easier for Clinton. Let’s hope.

There are other things in the news. Some horrible, like the Stanford rapist Brock Turner, who looks like he might only spend 3 months of his 6 month sentence behind bars for the 3 counts of felony sexual assault. (And if you haven’t yet read the victim’s letter, you really need to). And there’s also better news, like John Oliver buying and forgiving $15,000,000 of medical debt.

Our annual Saturday’s Voyeur outing has been reserved for July 22nd so save the date. We will have ticket reservation information soon so keep an eye on future emails!

See you tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally, June 3rd

Hello everyone!

Join us this evening, Friday June 3rd, for our regularly scheduled group meetup in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM.

We can talk about the recent Utah State Democratic Party Central Committee meeting where they discussed the future of superdelegates. Or we can talk about the heated rhetoric coming out of both the Trump and Clinton campaigns. Or maybe we can talk about the gorilla killed in the Cincinnati zoo when a toddler fell into its pen. Or we can discuss the media. In the same week as the gorilla story, three boats loaded with refugees sank in the Mediterranean Sea, killing more than 1700 people but even CNN barely mentioned it between stories on the Cincinnati zoo and the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard divorce scandal. And there was a shooting on the UCLA campus a couple of days ago which got wall-to-wall media attention as it unfolded but when it turned out to be a mundane murder/suicide rather than an act of terrorism, the news attention evaporated almost immediately.

In the future

Our annual Saturday’s Voyeur outing has been reserved for July 22nd so save the date. We will have ticket reservation information soon so keep an eye on future emails.

We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Drinking Liberally this Friday

Join us this Friday for another round of Drinking Liberally! As always, we’ll be in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6.

Before we get into the news of the week, put July 22nd on your calendar. Because that’s the night we’ll be doing our annual outing to Saturday’s Voyeur! More details to come so stay tuned.

This week, the Taliban leader in Afghanistan was killed by a US drone. But then shortly after, the Taliban announced they’ve already got a new leader.

In Utah-ish news: after Jason Chaffetz emberrassed the Secret Service, the Secret Service set out to embarrass Chaffetz by leaking information about his failed attempt to become a Secret Service agent years ago. Well now, 41 Secret Service staff have been disciplined in the media leak.

Speaking of embarrasing, Utah is one of the 11 states suing the Obama administration over “federal overreach” regarding Obama’s transgender bathroom directive. Some politicians have said it’s more about the federal overreach than it is about the bathroom issue, but we all know that if Obama had mandated that states install corporations into their legislature, these same states would NOT be protesting.

In potentially good news, the Huntsman family says their purchase of the Salt Lake Tribune to close by Wednesday, which would put our paer back into local hands. They’ve said they plan to keep Terry Orme as editor, and even say they want honest journalism. So let’s hope!

Anyway, see you tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally Friday May 20th

Dear Drinking Liberals,

Please join us tomorrow night at our usual watering hole Piper Down 1492 S State St starting at 6pm in the back bar.

Plenty to go over this week, like the conservatives continuing push of bigoted legislation, the house passed a National Defense Authorization Act bill that includes authorization of government contractors to fire any employee for being LGBT. A house panel voted against releasing to the public taxpayer funded reports. The republicans can’t decide if they support or don’t support Trump, they keep changing their minds. John Kasich has come out this week and stated that he would not accept a VP spot with Trump nor endorse him at this time. Speaking of Trumps VP, he has tapped the same lawyer from the McCain campaign to vet his VP pick. This is the same guy who vetted Sarah Palin and though she would make a good VP. Mitt Romney has ended his attempt to recruit a third party candidate to compete against Trump.

The Democrats are in the home stretch with 933 delegates up for grabs in the next few weeks. Regardless of the outcome, I know that I’m pretty excited to see how it plays out as I have never been witness to this type of presidential primary race.

So get down to Piper Down tomorrow and have a drink or two of whatever your favorite beverage is and lets talk politics!

See You Friday Night,
Christian, Laura
Jeremiah, Jason

Drinking Liberally, May 6th

Hello everyone!

A big thank you to all the candidates that joined us last week who are running for various offices in Millcreek!

Hopefully everyone is not too tired from celebrating Wednesday’s Star Wars holiday (May the Fourth be with you!) and Cinco De Mayo, to join us tomorrow, Friday May 6th, for our regularly scheduled Drinking Liberally meet up. As usual, we will be in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM.

In The News

It looks like, barring any last minute crazy convention shenanigans, Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee for President. And the GOP establishment is experiencing a severe case of buyers remorse. The next several months (or years) of American politics are going to make Game of Thrones look reasonable by comparison!

Former Utah Senator, Bob Bennett, has passed away. Despite being about as conservative as Republicans come during his time, he is now remembered as a “moderate” by today’s standards.

Perhaps of special interest to long-time DL member Ray, tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate as Alberta, Canada is on fire.

and…

Israel has rejected a proposed record $40 Billion aid package from the United States. It seems they want more.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Piper tomorrow evening. Let’s have a couple of drinks and take bets on potential Vice President candidates!

Drinking Liberally with Millcreek candidates

It was just last year that voters decided to make Millcreek township Salt Lake County’s 17th city. That makes Millcreek the 10th largest city, and a number of you probably live there. So come meet the Millcreek candidates! Running for mayor, we’ll have Becky Moss and JoAnne Wong, and representatives from the Scott Howell and Jeff Sivestrini campaigns. And for city council, we’ll have Seraya Armirthalingam. As always we’ll be meeting from 6-9, with the candidates speaking from about 7:15 until 8:30. Although Jeff Sivestrini’s representative has a prior commitment so will be speaking at 6:30.

Before and after the speakers we’ll have time to talk about the news of the week. Like how former inmates in Virginia are getting the right to vote – about 200,000 of them. Speaking of inmates, serial child molester (the judge’s words) Dennis Hastert has been sentenced to 15 months in prison. This despite people like the former house majority leader, Tom DeLay, writing a letter to the judge saying Hastert is a man of “strong faith” and “great integrity”. Because we all know DeLay knows about great integrity.

Or we can talk about the presidential election, if you’re not already bored of it. Cruz and Kasich made a deal to try to keep Trump from winning, though after the latest round of primaries, I don’t know how effective they’ll be. Then there’s the news of Cruz picking Carly Fiorina to be his VP should he win the ticket. Hmm.

In better news, the city of Cleveland has agreed to pay the family of Tamir Rice $6 million for the incident in which an officer shot and killed the 12 year old Tamir. However, no officers have been indicted, and Cleveland didn’t admit any wrongdoing. In fact, the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association is hoping that the Rice family use part of their money on youth firearm education!

Drinking Liberally this Friday

Well, Utah has made international news again. This time it’s for – as NY Mag’s The Cut puts it, “Single-Handedly End[ing] Pornography Usage With Resolution Declaring Porn Bad” The resolution, as you might remember, was submitted by Sen. Todd Weiler, who feels like we’ve got a public health crisis on our hands. And in the sexually repressed pockets of our state, that may very well be true. But doesn’t it seem like we’ve got even bigger health crises in our state, like prescription drug abuse, or our air quality? I mean if you want to talk about protecting the children, as Sen. Weiler does, what could have more of a direct impact on our children than cleaning up the harmful air they breathe? I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.

However silly/harmful our legislature is sometimes, it’s worth pointing out when they’ve done well. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! was in town this week and had Sen. Jim Debakis and Equality Utah Executive Director Troy Williams on her show, and they talked about the Utah Compromise. Or as Troy Williams puts it, the Utah Collaboration. http://www.democracynow.org/2016/4/19/as_anti_lgbt_laws_sweep_us

In other local news, the Huntsman family has stepped up to purchase the Salt Lake Tribune. We have yet to see what this will mean for the Trib, but it seems much better for the paper than being owned by a New York hedge fund.

If that’s not enough to talk about this Friday, there’s also the tragic news about the latest migrant ship capsizing, with as many as 500 people drowning. Or Obama’s visit to Saudi Arabia this week. Or closer to home again, we could talk about the three people charged in the Flint water crises – and how the governor is yet to even be questioned. Or in good news, Harriet Tubman replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20.
