Drinking Liberally Dose

It’s time for your regular dose of drinking while liberal!

Subjects of conversation may include Trump’s immigration flip-flop, Burkinis, the ridiculous rising cost of EpiPens, the earthquake in central Italy, the 15k Clinton emails recently released and the demonization of the Clinton Foundation, the attacks on the female characters of the new Ghostbusters movie and especially the vicious attacks on Leslie Jones (could it be because she’s a woman AND black?), the movie Southside With You, or Zika, which is worse than previously thought but prevention here in America goes unfunded due to political games. At least someone has an alternate solution (hint: it’s Hillary Clinton). And speaking of Zika, it looks like there might be some Zika here in Utah.

So join us tomorrow in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6pm.

Laura, Jeremiah,
Christian, Jason

Drinking Liberally Friday August 19th

Hi Drinking Liberals

Just your weekly reminder that we will be meeting this Friday in the back bar at Piper Down 1492 S. State St starting at 6pm.

With the general election in full swing there is plenty to talk about. I could post what idiotic thing Trump has said this week but he gets enough free publicity doing so. I do however find it hilarious that a bunch of protesters put up some naked statues of him in several US cities. We can talk about the justice departments announcement today that they will let all of the federal contracts for private prisons expire. Or a plethora of many other topics from the last week.

So come on down and unwind from the week and join me for a drink or two of your favorite beverage with some good conversation.

See you tomorrow,
Christian, Jason,
Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally tomorrow!

Just your weekly reminder to join us for Drinking Liberally tomorrow at the Piper Down starting at 6. We’ll likely be talking about Trump’s 2nd-amendment-people “joke”, his claim that President Obama founded ISIS, or any of the other absolutely asinine/dangerous things he’s said in the last week. I’m glad to know he realizes he’s got a Utah problem. Hillary, on the other hand, wrote an op-ed in the Deseret News in which she tries to reach out to Mormon voters. Will it work? And we can also try and figure out why Mark Shurtleff was at the Bill Clinton fundraiser today.

See you Friday!

Drinking Liberally, August, 5th

Hello liberal drinkers!

Join us tomorrow, August 5th, from 6:00-9:00 PM, in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 South State Street) for our regular meetup with drinks and discussion.

This week the big news is probably Donald Trump’s complete meltdown.

or the major problems in Rio before the Olympics begin next week.

We can also discuss Penthouse magazine’s scathing indictment of our own Gov. Herbert and Todd Weiler for their anti-porn crusade.

Then there is Jeremy Johnson’s 11 year sentencefor filling out paperwork wrong. To anyone keeping score, that’s 11 years in prison for the whistle blower and zero for the (alleged) corrupt AGs he turned in.

Or perhaps you may be interested in helping Utah get our first after school program for Satanists. I imagine the snacks are probably better and the rules a bit more indulgent.

Anyway, why not get out of this heat for a couple of hours and have a dink with us! We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally at Saturday’s Voyeur!

First, thanks to Mike Weinholtz and team for coming out to speak to us last week. It was a good crowd, and it seems like a lot of people are excited for some of our local candidates. Which is good, because with all the attention the presidential race gets, it’s kind of easy to forget there are other races unless you’re involved with one.

In case you haven’t laugh-cried enough this week due to the RNC convention, tomorrow night is Drinking Liberally night at Saturday’s Voyeur! We’ll be meeting in the green room downstairs at 6:30 for a little pre-show drinks and apps. Laura is bringing some beer, wine, and a punch, but if you wanted to bring something to share, please do. And for those who’ve never been to Saturday’s Voyeur before, you can bring your own food and drink for the show itself. Salt Lake Acting Company is in an old church at 168 W 500 N, Salt Lake City.

Because we’re going to Saturday’s Voyeur, we’d normally not hold our regular meeting at Piper Down. But Jason said he’ll be there in case anyone didn’t get their Saturday’s Voyeur tickets but still wants to grab a drink with liberal friends.

See you tomorrow!

Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally + reserve your Saturday’s Voyeur seats!

Hello liberals,

Join us tomorrow in the back room of the Piper Down for our regular meetup with drinks. Plenty to talk about, what with two black men, Alton Sterling and then Philando Castile, being shot by cops in as many days. Of course, they’re just the ones for which there was video evidence.

The other big news of the week was the press conference from the FBI saying they weren’t going to bring charges against Hillary Clinton in this whole email scandal. Republicans desperately wanted to see those charges filed, so of course they’re going to throw a tantrum from now until election day – and probably beyond.

It’s Saturday’s Voyeur time! Grab your tickets by calling Salt Lake Acting Company: (801) 363-7522 and telling them you’re with Drinking Liberally to reserve your seat in our block. Tickets for our group will be reserved until the 15th with a $15 discount, and then those seats will be open to the general public. And if you want a table, be especially quick, because there’s only about 10 more seats left!

See you tomorrow!
Jeremiah, Laura,
Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally, July 1st

Hello everyone!

I am going to keep this message short and without article links because my office is about 90 degrees due to my swamp cooler malfunctioning and I only want to be in the room for five minutes (or less!) if possible.

We will be having our regularly scheduled meetup in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM, tomorrow July 1st.

Upcoming Events

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Weinholtz will join us on July 15th to talk about his campaign.

Our annual field trip to see Saturday’s Voyeur is scheduled for August 24th. Grab your tickets (quick!) by calling Salt Lake Acting Company: (801) 363-7522 and telling them you’re with Drinking Liberally to reserve your seat in our block.

In the News

We can talk about the continued fallout from the Brexit vote, the results of the Utah primary elections, the terrible terrorist attack in Turkey, Trump’s plummeting polling, AG Lynch and former President Clinton’s unforced error in Phoenix or the unsanitary and potentially dangerous Olympic competition sites in Rio.

Why not get out of the heat, stop by and join us this holiday weekend for a drink or two while we discuss the topics of the day? We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening!

Jason, Christian
Jeremiah, Laura

Drinking liberally after a crazy week

Wow, what a week! Where to start? Let’s start with some thing light. Do you remember when Utah had a Porn Czar? Well now we’ve got a Porn Dog!

What else? Oh, Iraq has said they’ve taken back control of Fallujah from ISIL. Good news for Iraq. Venezuela could also use some good news, but unfortunately they continues to be in a really bad way.

Then there’s the Brexit. Results are still coming in as I type this, but right now it’s looking like the British Trump-types are winning their bid for leaving the EU. Speaking of Trump, he fired his reporter-assaulting campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, but it looks like CNN has already given him a job as one of their talking heads.

The Supreme Court ruled on Utah vs Strieff, which effectively ruled that evidence of a crime can still be used in some cases even if that evidence was obtained illegally. That’s bad news for civil rights. But Justice Sonia Sotomayor had a great dissent: “By legitimizing the conduct that produces this double consciousness, this case tells everyone, white and black, guilty and innocent, that an officer can verify your legal status at any time. It says that your body is subject to invasion while courts excuse the violation of your rights. It implies that you are not a citizen of a democracy but the subject of a carceral state, just waiting to be cataloged. We must not pretend that the countless people who are routinely targeted by police are ‘isolated.’ They are the canaries in the coal mine whose deaths, civil and literal, warn us that no one can breathe in this atmosphere. They are the ones who recognize that unlawful police stops corrode all our civil liberties and threaten all our lives. Until their voices matter too, our justice system will continue to be anything but. I dissent.”
