Drinking Liberally at Saturday’s Voyeur!

First, thanks to Mike Weinholtz and team for coming out to speak to us last week. It was a good crowd, and it seems like a lot of people are excited for some of our local candidates. Which is good, because with all the attention the presidential race gets, it’s kind of easy to forget there are other races unless you’re involved with one.

In case you haven’t laugh-cried enough this week due to the RNC convention, tomorrow night is Drinking Liberally night at Saturday’s Voyeur! We’ll be meeting in the green room downstairs at 6:30 for a little pre-show drinks and apps. Laura is bringing some beer, wine, and a punch, but if you wanted to bring something to share, please do. And for those who’ve never been to Saturday’s Voyeur before, you can bring your own food and drink for the show itself. Salt Lake Acting Company is in an old church at 168 W 500 N, Salt Lake City.

Because we’re going to Saturday’s Voyeur, we’d normally not hold our regular meeting at Piper Down. But Jason said he’ll be there in case anyone didn’t get their Saturday’s Voyeur tickets but still wants to grab a drink with liberal friends.

See you tomorrow!
Laura, Jeremiah,
Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally + reserve your Saturday’s Voyeur seats!

Hello liberals,

Join us tomorrow in the back room of the Piper Down for our regular meetup with drinks. Plenty to talk about, what with two black men, Alton Sterling and then Philando Castile, being shot by cops in as many days. Of course, they’re just the ones for which there was video evidence.

The other big news of the week was the press conference from the FBI saying they weren’t going to bring charges against Hillary Clinton in this whole email scandal. Republicans desperately wanted to see those charges filed, so of course they’re going to throw a tantrum from now until election day – and probably beyond.

It’s Saturday’s Voyeur time! Grab your tickets by calling Salt Lake Acting Company: (801) 363-7522 and telling them you’re with Drinking Liberally to reserve your seat in our block. Tickets for our group will be reserved until the 15th with a $15 discount, and then those seats will be open to the general public. And if you want a table, be especially quick, because there’s only about 10 more seats left!

See you tomorrow!

Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally, July 1st

Hello everyone!

I am going to keep this message short and without article links because my office is about 90 degrees due to my swamp cooler malfunctioning and I only want to be in the room for five minutes (or less!) if possible.

We will be having our regularly scheduled meetup in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM, tomorrow July 1st.

Upcoming Events

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Weinholtz will join us on July 15th to talk about his campaign.

Our annual field trip to see Saturday’s Voyeur is scheduled for August 24th. Grab your tickets (quick!) by calling Salt Lake Acting Company: (801) 363-7522 and telling them you’re with Drinking Liberally to reserve your seat in our block.

In the News

We can talk about the continued fallout from the Brexit vote, the results of the Utah primary elections, the terrible terrorist attack in Turkey, Trump’s plummeting polling, AG Lynch and former President Clinton’s unforced error in Phoenix or the unsanitary and potentially dangerous Olympic competition sites in Rio.

Why not get out of the heat, stop by and join us this holiday weekend for a drink or two while we discuss the topics of the day? We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening!

Jeremiah, Laura

Drinking liberally after a crazy week

Wow, what a week! Where to start? Let’s start with some thing light. Do you remember when Utah had a Porn Czar? Well now we’ve got a Porn Dog!

What else? Oh, Iraq has said they’ve taken back control of Fallujah from ISIL. Good news for Iraq. Venezuela could also use some good news, but unfortunately they continues to be in a really bad way.

Then there’s the Brexit. Results are still coming in as I type this, but right now it’s looking like the British Trump-types are winning their bid for leaving the EU. Speaking of Trump, he fired his reporter-assaulting campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, but it looks like CNN has already given him a job as one of their talking heads.

The Supreme Court ruled on Utah vs Strieff, which effectively ruled that evidence of a crime can still be used in some cases even if that evidence was obtained illegally. That’s bad news for civil rights. But Justice Sonia Sotomayor had a great dissent: “By legitimizing the conduct that produces this double consciousness, this case tells everyone, white and black, guilty and innocent, that an officer can verify your legal status at any time. It says that your body is subject to invasion while courts excuse the violation of your rights. It implies that you are not a citizen of a democracy but the subject of a carceral state, just waiting to be cataloged. We must not pretend that the countless people who are routinely targeted by police are ‘isolated.’ They are the canaries in the coal mine whose deaths, civil and literal, warn us that no one can breathe in this atmosphere. They are the ones who recognize that unlawful police stops corrode all our civil liberties and threaten all our lives. Until their voices matter too, our justice system will continue to be anything but. I dissent.”

Drinking Liberally Friday June 17th

Howdy Drinking Liberals,

Join us tomorrow evening for our regular Friday night meetup at our usual watering hole in the back bar at Piper Down 1492 S. State St starting at 6pm to 8:30.

It’s been an emotional week after the shooting in Orlando, that has heated up many debates from guns, Islamic radicalism, to homophobia and everything in-between. Senate Dems in response engaged in a 15 hour filibuster until a promise was made to get a vote on some gun control measures. The senate just voted to include women in the draft. Clinton just got endorsements from big unions like the AFL-CIO and even Oprah. Trump keeps opening his mouth and spewing nonsense while his approval ratings keep dropping. The lead up to what will happen at the national conventions for both parties is shaping up to be very interesting. So come down and lets unwind from the week and talk while we sip a drink or two of our favorite beverage.

Don’t forget to save the date, our annual Saturday’s Voyeur outing has been reserved for July 22nd. We will have ticket reservation information very soon, so keep an eye on future emails.

See you Friday night,
Christian, Jason
Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally this Friday

Join us in the back room of the Piper Down tomorrow for our regular meeting, where we can talk about all the big news of the day. This week Hillary became the presumptive nominee, and with that designation has been endorsed by Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren. Now she’s just got to hit it home in the general election. I have to believe that if Trump keeps opening his mouth – and why wouldn’t he, he’s a narcissist – it’ll be easier for Clinton. Let’s hope.

There are other things in the news. Some horrible, like the Stanford rapist Brock Turner, who looks like he might only spend 3 months of his 6 month sentence behind bars for the 3 counts of felony sexual assault. (And if you haven’t yet read the victim’s letter, you really need to). And there’s also better news, like John Oliver buying and forgiving $15,000,000 of medical debt.

Our annual Saturday’s Voyeur outing has been reserved for July 22nd so save the date. We will have ticket reservation information soon so keep an eye on future emails!

See you tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally, June 3rd

Hello everyone!

Join us this evening, Friday June 3rd, for our regularly scheduled group meetup in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM.

We can talk about the recent Utah State Democratic Party Central Committee meeting where they discussed the future of superdelegates. Or we can talk about the heated rhetoric coming out of both the Trump and Clinton campaigns. Or maybe we can talk about the gorilla killed in the Cincinnati zoo when a toddler fell into its pen. Or we can discuss the media. In the same week as the gorilla story, three boats loaded with refugees sank in the Mediterranean Sea, killing more than 1700 people but even CNN barely mentioned it between stories on the Cincinnati zoo and the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard divorce scandal. And there was a shooting on the UCLA campus a couple of days ago which got wall-to-wall media attention as it unfolded but when it turned out to be a mundane murder/suicide rather than an act of terrorism, the news attention evaporated almost immediately.

In the future

Our annual Saturday’s Voyeur outing has been reserved for July 22nd so save the date. We will have ticket reservation information soon so keep an eye on future emails.

We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Jason, Christian
Laura, Jeremiah

Drinking Liberally this Friday

Join us this Friday for another round of Drinking Liberally! As always, we’ll be in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6.

Before we get into the news of the week, put July 22nd on your calendar. Because that’s the night we’ll be doing our annual outing to Saturday’s Voyeur! More details to come so stay tuned.

This week, the Taliban leader in Afghanistan was killed by a US drone. But then shortly after, the Taliban announced they’ve already got a new leader.

In Utah-ish news: after Jason Chaffetz emberrassed the Secret Service, the Secret Service set out to embarrass Chaffetz by leaking information about his failed attempt to become a Secret Service agent years ago. Well now, 41 Secret Service staff have been disciplined in the media leak.

Speaking of embarrasing, Utah is one of the 11 states suing the Obama administration over “federal overreach” regarding Obama’s transgender bathroom directive. Some politicians have said it’s more about the federal overreach than it is about the bathroom issue, but we all know that if Obama had mandated that states install corporations into their legislature, these same states would NOT be protesting.

In potentially good news, the Huntsman family says their purchase of the Salt Lake Tribune to close by Wednesday, which would put our paer back into local hands. They’ve said they plan to keep Terry Orme as editor, and even say they want honest journalism. So let’s hope!

Anyway, see you tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally Friday May 20th

Dear Drinking Liberals,

Please join us tomorrow night at our usual watering hole Piper Down 1492 S State St starting at 6pm in the back bar.

Plenty to go over this week, like the conservatives continuing push of bigoted legislation, the house passed a National Defense Authorization Act bill that includes authorization of government contractors to fire any employee for being LGBT. A house panel voted against releasing to the public taxpayer funded reports. The republicans can’t decide if they support or don’t support Trump, they keep changing their minds. John Kasich has come out this week and stated that he would not accept a VP spot with Trump nor endorse him at this time. Speaking of Trumps VP, he has tapped the same lawyer from the McCain campaign to vet his VP pick. This is the same guy who vetted Sarah Palin and though she would make a good VP. Mitt Romney has ended his attempt to recruit a third party candidate to compete against Trump.

The Democrats are in the home stretch with 933 delegates up for grabs in the next few weeks. Regardless of the outcome, I know that I’m pretty excited to see how it plays out as I have never been witness to this type of presidential primary race.

So get down to Piper Down tomorrow and have a drink or two of whatever your favorite beverage is and lets talk politics!

See You Friday Night,
Christian, Laura
Jeremiah, Jason
