Drinking Liberally Updates & Mtg. Reminder

Hello everyone! We will be having our regular gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30-9:30PM tomorrow, Friday, March 6th.

We are going to have some guest speakers in the coming weeks. First, on March 13th we’ll have guest speaker Maryann Martindale of Alliance for a Better Utah out to give us a legislative session wrap up.

Then on April 3rd we will have Kevin Leecaster, environmental scientist and volunteer with with Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-partisan grassroots organization seeking an effective solution to address climate change that will put us on a path to a more sustainable energy economy. Kevin will talk to us about a few substantive things that can be done.

From Kevin:

“I hope you can come on April 3rd to learn more about Citizens Climate Lobby for a short discussion and longer question and answer session as we hope to gain more support to help sway our legislators all around the country during this important #PathwayToParis year in which we need to build the political will to create a concrete global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Some possible discussion topics for tomorrow

While it looks like Governor Herbert’s plan for Medicaid expansion called Healthy Utah, is now dead in the Utah legislatur, the compromise non-discrimination/religious freedom bill is on the fast track to be passed this legislative session.

The Israeli Prime Minister addressed a joint session of congress where he proceeded to tell us our President is wrong and what we really need to do with our foreign policy concerning Iran is to stop negotiating and get tough.

Russian opposition leader and outspoken critic of Vladamir Puti, Boris Nemtsov was assassinated right outside the Kremlin. But don’t worry, Putin is going to personally oveersee the investigation.

Drinking Liberally this Friday

It’s time once again for Drinking Liberally! We’ll be gathering around the back room of the Piper Down starting around 6:30. Plenty to talk about again this week, including the upcoming Netanyahu visit, the FCC voting to implement net neutrality rules!, the GOP’s renewed efforts to repeal banking reforms, the GOP’s continual roadblocking of Obama’s Attorney General nomination, and Healthy Utah.

Oh, or the fact that a Republican legislator introduced a bill that would make medical marijuana legal here. Of course I think it’s unlikely to pass, but if it did anyone who can prove they’ve got at least three quarters of a million dollars in assets could conceivably make a killing selling it. And is it funny to anyone else that while it’s being discussed on Utah’s capitol hill, Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz is threatening retribution for the people pushing for legalization in the nation’s capitol?

In two weeks, on March 13th we’ll have guest speaker (and dark money bully) Maryann Martindale from the Alliance for a Better Utah out to give us a legislative recap. So put it on your your calendars.

See you tomorrow night!

Jason, Christian

Drinking Liberally loves America

Hello fellow liberals,

Join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down for another round of Drinking Liberally!

This week we can talk about the Texas judge who’s blocking Obama’s compassionate immigration policy. Or the Alabama supreme court justice who’s hinting at having his court abolish all marriages if same sex marriage is permitted to stand. Where are all those anti-legislating-from-the-bench people when you need them?

Or there’s Rudolph Giuliani who says that Obama doesn’t love America. Are you kidding me? You don’t run for the hardest job in the world (twice!), with a congress that doesn’t let you get anything done, just for the benefit of letting some self-righteous asshat tell you that you don’t love the country you’re working so hard for.

Locally, the commemorative legislative firearm has been blessed, bloviating is under way, and we’ve made it past the halfway mark of the legislative session. On March 13th we’ll have guest speaker Maryann Martindale of Alliance for a Better Utah out to give us a legislative update.

See you tomorrow night!

DL Meetup Tonight, February 13th

Sorry for the late reminder email. Yesterday was my Birthday and I had family in town so I was unable to get to it last night.

We will be having our regular gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30-9:30PM tonight, Friday, February 13th.

Some possible discussion topics:

The President seems to be on a roll lately with his more agressive and challenging demeanor. He brought up the Christian history of violent persecution at a prayer breakfast and he threw the ball concerning the authorization to fight the Islamic State back to the Legislative Branch, essentially telling Congress to put up or shut up.

In gay marriage news, Alabama, led by their State’s Supreme Court Chief Justice, seem determined to relive the most embarrassing and shameful moments of their own civil rights history by refusing the Federal Courts’ orders to start issuing marriage licences to gay couples.

In local news, there is plenty of things going on at the legislative session. Hopefully we will have a few insiders show up tonight to give us the juicy, behind the scenes details.

And finally, in tragic news, after 16 years, Jon Stewart will be leaving The Daily Show sometime this year. His legacy, in my opinion, will be that he revolutionized how we get our news. He provided some of the most biting and insightful social commentary and media criticism through a satirical lens that somehow made the information he delivered seem more truthful and sincere than that provided by corporate mainstream media.

Anyway, we look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

DL Meetup, February 6th

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying the unseasonably mild weather! Join us tomorrow, Friday February 6th, for our regular DL gathering in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:30-9:30 PM.

This week we can talk about the first week of the legislative session. So far we have Representative Greene of Pleasant Grove questioning whether sex with an unconscious spouse should count as rape.

It looks like health care is going to be this session’s big issue. Governor Herbert’s Healthy Utah plan is going to go head to head with Sen. Allen Christensen’s Frail Utah plan.

Or we can discuss the huge victory for net neutrality this week with the FCC deciding to treat the internet as a utility.

Or we can discuss how the Islamic State has decided to escalate their terror tactics by burning a captured Jordanian air force pilot alive. In my opinion, I don’t know if the Islamic State has considered who they are picking a fight with. King Abdullah was educated at Sandhurst and used to head up the Jordanian special forces. He has tried diplomacy. I doubt he will try it again. He won’t back down from a fight.

We hope to see you tomorrow starting at 6:30!

We’ll also have time to talk about the State of the Union speech, Boehner’s invitation to have Netanyahu address congress just a couple weeks before Israeli elections, former House Speaker Becky Lockhart’s sudden passing, or whatever else we feel like chatting about.

So we’ll see you tomorrow night!

Drinking Liberally

Greetings Drinking Liberals,

Join us this Friday for another round of Drinking Liberally. It sounds like President Obama is set to announce two free years of community college for students, which is big news!

The attack of the satirical magazine Charlie Hedbo in Paris is also big news, but for another reason, unfortunately. The French government are calling it a terrorist act, but luckily neither the French nor other satirists are giving in to being terrorized.

NOT big news, though it should be, is the bombing of an NAACP office in Colorado Springs.

So we’ll have plenty to talk about tomorrow. And then in two weeks (the 23rd) we’ll laugh, as we’ll have the Quick Wits comedy improv group coming out to do some interactive political improv. So put that on your calendar and join us!

See you tomorrow starting at 6:30!

Drinking Liberally, Tonight!

Join us this evening, Friday January 2nd, for the first regular Drinking Liberally meetup of the year! As usual we will be in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State St) from 6:30-9:30 PM.

Coming up we will get back to having a few guest speakers. January 23rd we will be doing interactive political improv with Quick Wits. We will have more details soon.

In retrospect, 2014 was a very contentious year locally, nationally and globally. Police use of deadly force captured headlines from Missouri to New York to Utah, sparking protests and counter-protests. Gay marriage rapidly spread across the country. The U.S. economy is booming while the oil market is in free fall. people engaged in public displays of protest to a much greater extent than we have seen in decades and war and conflict greatly expanded. Here are a few highlights, or low lights depending on your perspective:

Year in Review

The year began with the Winter Olympic in Sochi Russia amid controversy surrounding the country’s intensely repressive anti-gay laws and the ridiculously shoddy construction of the Olympic facilities.

February saw a Western-friendly coup in Ukraine quickly followed by the Russian annexation of Crimea. Eventually a civil war erupted in Eastern Ukraine with the West supporting the new Ukrainian government and Russia supporting the separatists. The conflict got wider attention in July when a Malaysian passenger airliner was mistakenly shot down. The civil war is still ongoing, though it has settled into a stalemate.

March saw the UN’s International Court of Justice declare Japan’s Antarctic whaling illegal. Locally, the Count My Vote initiative was tweaked and passed as SB54, potentially fundamentally changing how candidates for political office are selected. The Utah GOP is currently suing to block it.
