Greetings, Drinking Liberals. It’s that time of the week again. And so much can happen in a week, especially when the Utah Legislature is in session.
Let’s start with HB363, the Health Education Amendments, that allow school districts to choose whether or not they’ll teach sex education. If they choose to teach it, they must teach abstinence only. Contraceptives, sex outside of marriage, and homosexuality are subjects that cannot be discussed. As Sen. Pat Jones said, this is a “mandate against reality”. It’s now up to the Governor to sign this thing into law, so if you think it’s a bad idea, let him know. One way to do that is through a petition here.
Then we’ve got the Republicans in the Legislature demanding that the federal government turn over federal land so it can be exploited for its resources by their energy company friends. The Legislature’s own attorneys say it’s likely to end in a failed legal battle with the federal goverment. But hey, it’s the Utah taxpayer who has to flip the bill for litigation, so who cares?
It’s all enough to make you want to drink. And speaking of a drink, we’ll have to raise a glass this Friday in honor of Todd Taylor, who passed away this week. Many of us involved in liberal politics knew Todd personally and/or professionally as the longtime Executive Director of the Democratic Party. He was a major force in local politics and he’ll be sorely missed.
Okay, let’s lighten things up a bit: This Friday we’re going to have a “How to be a Delegate” night with Special Guests Pat Bagley (SLTrib), Alexis Baigue (SLAC) & Lauren Littlefield (SLCounty Dems)! It is a short satirical skit that will be performed one time only. Be there by 7:15 or you will spend the rest of your life quietly contemplating what you missed out on. Anyone who is getting tired of the barrage of phone calls, emails and mailings from the County Mayoral campaigns recruiting you to be a delegate will surely appreciate the skit.
Greetings Everyone!
Join us tomorrow tonight for a regular Drinking Liberally meeting. As always, we’ll be in the back room of the Piper Down beginning at 6:30. With the legislative session wrapping up, the Michigan primary and the death of Andrew Breitbart, we have a lot to talk about!
We have heard that our email list may have been compromised by a spammer. We are trying to get to the bottom of it. Please be patient with us. Also, if anyone meets the spammer and wants to have a long “conversation” in the back of a dark alley, the hosts will guarantee you do not pay for a drink all night. No questions asked.
Next week we’re going to have a “How to be a Delegate” night with Special Guests Pat Bagley (SLTrib), Alexis Baigue (SLAC) & Lauren Littlefield(SLCountyDems)! It is a short satirical skit that will be performed one time only, promptly at 7:00. Be there on time or you will spend the rest of your life quietly contemplating what you missed out on. Anyone who is getting tired of the barrage of phone calls, emails and mailings from the County Mayoral campaigns recruiting you to be a delegate will surely appreciate the skit.
So, bundle up against the cold and join us tomorrow night!

Join us this Friday when we welcome not one, but two candidates for Salt Lake County Mayor. Senators Ross Romero and Ben McAdams are both seeking the seat. Both are good candidates, and while this won’t be a debate, each candidate will have the opportunity to tell us why they think they’re the best candidate to replace outgoing mayor Corroon.
And next month we’re going to have a “How to be a Delegate” night with Special Guests. So keep an eye on our emails for details on that event, it should be fun.

Huntman gets the
Boston Globe endorsement.
Carl Wimmer is the
latest Patrick Henry caucus member to flee the Hill
The US House District 4 race gets more crowded
