Drinking Liberally tomorrow

We’re back this week! Join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6. However, we won’t be meeting June 2nd (next Friday). Piper Down is having their Pride Party that Friday.

Tomorrow we can talk about all the candidates vying for Chaffetz’s seat. I’m still wondering the real reason he’s vacating his seat. We’ll have to see what comes out of Strawberry C. In other local news, a new party has formed to be the party for centrist Utahns, called Utah United Party. The Drinking Liberally hosts have no intentions of starting a Drinking in the Middle of the Road chapter.

One last thing. Save the Date for Saturday’s Voyeur on July 21st! More details to come.

So come join Jeremiah and Laura tomorrow night!

Drinking Liberally SLC meets from 6:00-9:00 every every Friday in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 S. State Street).

Drinking Liberally this Friday

Another crazy week. Let’s start locally. 400+ new laws went into effect on Tuesday, including some of the new liquor legislation (no .05 yet though), and an asinine law that makes doctors mislead patients seeking an abortion. In better news around women’s health, federal judge Dee Benson has signed an order barring Utah from defunding Planned Parenthood. Interior Secretary Zinke spent 3 days in Utah to tour both Bears Ears and the Grand Staircase Escalante monuments. Oh, and senator Hatch essentially called Americans greedy for wanting healthcare.

Then there’s all the national and international stuff, like French election, U.S. arming the Syrian Kurds, and of course the big news nationally, Trump firing FBI director Comey the day before meeting with the Russian foreign minister. This is of course *after* Comey asked for additional resources for the investigation into Russia’s role in the Trump campaign.

So join Jeremiah and all your liberal friends this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down from 6 to 9.

Drinking Liberally Meetup Reminder, May 5

Hello everyone!

Please join us for our weekly gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM. This week we have a lot to talk (drink) about! I know I sure can use some decompression!

In The News

The big topic will probably be the House passing Trump’s repeal and replace of Obamacare. When the ACA was passed in March of 2010 the GOP complained about how after a year and a half of the political process it was still rushed and that they were voting en masse against it because it had not been properly vetted yet. I don’t think they get to ever use that excuse again. Their vote today includes provisions worked out through back room deals and secret meetings, and will not include any financial analysis by the CBO. So, zero vetting. I wonder how many of those representatives are going to be shocked to discover that their coronary deficiency will count as a pre-existing condition?

This week we also got James Comey testifying before Congress. Again. This time around he says Russia is our biggest threat and his media blitz eleven days before the election, that revealed details of the FBI investigation into Clinton but never mentioned the FBI investigation into the Trump campaign, is now Bill Clinton, Loretta Lynch, Huma Abedeen and Anthony Wiener’s fault. I bet the next time he testifies he will rope in Elizabeth Warren, Michael Moore and the cast of SNL too.

There is also another police shooting of an unarmed black kid named Jordan Edwards, outside of Dallas. At least this time the police department immediately revealed the false statements and attempted cover up and fired the officer. We are still waiting on criminal charges though.

Drinking Liberally tonight

Hi all,

First, we’d like to thank Zach Frankel and Wendy Fischer from the Utah Rivers Council & Utah Open Lands for coming out to speak to us last week!

Tonight will be a regular, non-guest speaker Drinking Liberally meeting. There’s plenty to talk about, of course, starting with Jason Chaffetz’s early announcement that he’s not going to run again. LOTS of speculation around that. There’s the first 100 days of the Trump presidency. Government shutdown. Etc, etc.

So come join Jeremiah and the rest of your Drinking Liberally friends in the back room of the Piper Down tonight starting at 6pm!

Drinking Liberally tomorrow, guest speakers next Friday

Hello liberals! First things first: next Friday April 21st, in honor of Earth Day, we will have guest speakers Zach Frankel and Wendy Fischer joining us to discuss the important issues concerning Utah conservation efforts including both the Lake Powell Pipeline and Bear River Development as well as issues surrounding the conservation of open lands. So be sure to join us for that!

Much to talk about this week. A U.S. drone killed at least 18 Syrians allies; the worst friendly fire incident on this war on ISIL. So of course that’s followed by dropping the “mother of all bombs” on Afghanistan, which changed the headlines a bit. Sen Hatch’s seat is a big topic, with many prospective candidates eyeing it, though he says he’ll run again. He’s got lots of money but not a lot of popularity.

The Salt Lake Tribune won a Pulitzer prize! For the second time in the history of the paper, this time for their coverage of Utah college campus rape. Big kudos to them!

One final thing: if you’re a woman considering running for office, Real Women Run training will be held on April 22nd. They’ve seen a big uptick in women registering for this training, so if you’re thinking about going you might register soon https://realwomenrundotorg.wordpress.com/events/

Join Laura and Jeremiah for a regular meetup tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally Meetup Reminder, April 7

Hello everyone!

First, a special thanks to our guests last week, Nicole Nixon, Robert Gehrke, and Benjamin Wood. Their incites into the current state of journalism was informative and enlightening.

Second, our next guest speakers will be on April 21st. In honor of Earth Day, we will have Zach Frankel and Wendy Fischer join us to discuss the important issues concerning Utah conservation efforts including both the Lake Powell Pipeline and Bear River Development as well as issues surrounding the conservation of open lands. We will add more details as we get closer to the 21st but pencil us in if protecting the environment is one of your top concerns.

Join us tomorrow, April 7th from 6:00-9:00 PM for our regularly scheduled social gathering in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street), we have a lot to talk about.

In The News

From local news where Terry Diehl, Utah politico and developer, of UTA fame, has been indicted by a grand jury on twelve charges concerning money he made/hid (allegedly) in connection with Front Runner, suggesting corruption at UTA. Is anyone remotely surprised?

Or there is the Senate invoking the nuclear option in order to force through the Gorsuch nomination to SCOTUS.

Then there is the bad case of deja vu with with what was likely sarin nerve gas being used by the Asad regime against Syrian civilians followed by our launch of more than fifty cruise missiles targeting regime assets. There is no way to concisely or glibly offer my opinion on the subject but if you want my area expertise on the subject, please ask me about it tomorrow.

Drinking Liberally tomorrow (and not again until the 31st)

Two items before we get into things:
1. Reminder, we won’t be meeting next Friday because it’s St Patrick’s day, the busiest night of the year for Piper Down. Also the week after that, the 24th, because a party was accidentally scheduled over us that night.
2. But the Friday after that, the 31st, we’ve got guest speakers! We’ll be talking about modern journalism in the age of “fake news”. So far, we’ve got Robert Gehrke (@RobertGehrke), columnist at the Salt Lake Tribune; Benjamin Wood (@BjaminWood), reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune, and Nicole Nixon (@_Nixo), reporter for KUER FM. So a really great lineup so far.

It’s the last night of the legislative session! We’ll know tonight the extent of the damages done. Each session seems like one step forward and two steps back.

For instance, the legislature passed a bill that will drop the legal driving blood-alcohol level to 0.05, the lowest in the country. Between that, the opposition to Bears Ears, and the argument with the Outdoor Retailer convention that resulted in them deciding to move somewhere else, Utah seems openly hostile to tourism.

You can listen to a story about the liquor law changes from Nicole Nixon here http://kuer.org/post/legislature-approves-liquor-reform-bill

More roundups of this legislative session to come, no doubt, but I did want to point out the Robert Gehrke column about what Utah has decided to spend its money on. http://www.sltrib.com/news/5027554-155/gehrke-utah-lawmakers-prioritize-…

Another interesting article, about how 1 in every 4 bills pose a conflict of interest for their legislative sponsors http://www.sltrib.com/news/4991476-155/1-of-every-4-bills-in

We can also talk about John Huntsman as Russian ambassador; or Chaffetz’s tone deaf comment about the poor foregoing a phone so they can pay for their healthcare needs.

So join Laura this Friday, March 10th, for a regular Drinking Liberally session. And then join us again on the 31st for our guest speakers!

Drinking Liberally Meetup Reminder, March 3rd

Hello everyone,

Please join us this evening for regular Friday meetup in the back bar of Piper Down 1492 South State Street from 6:00-9:00.

Sorry for the late message. We wee trying to track down some scheduling issues before sending out the group message. First, the bad news. This time of year is the busiest for our hosts at Piper Down and the entire week surrounding St. Patrick’s Day is full of events, live music, and so on. Past experience has taught us that it is impossible to have our regular discussion oriented gathering on the holiday. Therefore we will not meetup on the 17th. Then, by unlucky coincidence, the entire backroom has already been reserved on the 24th, so we will not be able to meet there. The good news is that we are lining up guest speakers from the media for our return on the 31st. The tentative topic will be modern journalism in the age of “fake news”. So, our March schedule looks like:

March 3: Regular meetup
March 10: Regular meetup
March 17: No Meetup
March 24: No Meetup
March 31: Journalist guest speakers

In the news

I will keep this short, former AG, John Swallow was acquitted of all charges yesterday. It is too bad they lost their key witness when he refused to testify. If only they had some other evidence, say an audio recording or something, with incriminating evidence on it….

http://www.sltrib.com/news/5005232-155/latest-on-john-swallow-acquittal-…

It seems the Trump administration’s ties to Russia are becoming more and more apparent. It may be easier to ask which senior officials did not secretly meet with Russian officials.Kudos to the Russian ambassador. He just may be the hardest working individual in Washington DC.

http://www.politico.com/trump-russia-ties-scandal-guide

Team Trump also plans on slashing the EPA budget by 20% while drastically increasing military spending. That should fix our air-porn problem!
