Drinking Liberally Meetup, January 4th

Hello Everyone!

Hopefully you all enjoyed your holidays. Join us tomorrow, January 4th, for our first DL meetup of the year. We will be at our regular location in the back room at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) from 6:00-9:00 PM where I am sure we have a lot to talk about.

For example, there is a government shutdown that is about to enter its third week as the new, most diverse in history, Democrat controlled congress, with the new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, was sworn in today. Or we could talk abut Elizabeth Warren throwing her hat into the 2020 presidential race. Or we can list how all the departures from Trump’s West Wing as even more people flee the offices. Or, as a direct result of the trade war, Apple stock lost 10% of its value today, causing the stock market to nose dive again. We can also talk about Utah’s new .05 BAC law that is now in effect. And locally, the Democratic Party has 30 days to appoint someone to replace Representative McAdams as Salt Lake County Mayor.

Please venture out into the cold and join your host, Jason, for a couple of drinks and good conversation about these topics or whatever else you wish to talk about. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Last Drinking Liberally of 2018

Despite the holiday and slow news week (ha ha) we will still be meeting for our regular get-together in the back room of the Piper Down this Friday the 28th starting at 6pm. Besides the government shutdown and the turmoil in the stock market and the white house, we can talk about the year. Because what a year it’s been.

See you tomorrow night for the last Drinking Liberally of the year!

Drinking Liberally Friday December 20th

Dear Drinking Liberals,

Please join us this Friday December 20th for our regularly scheduled meetup in the back bar of Piper Down, starting at 6pm.

As always Lord Cheeto has given us a plethora of stuff to discuss. Like how he wants a federal court to look into Saturday Night Live for making fun of him. Or (as of this writing) that Trump is doubling down and has told Paul Ryan that he will not sign the budget bill unless it includes funding for his wall, making a government shutdown imminent. Speaking of funding for his wall, some people set up a gofund me account to pay for it and people are actually donating money and they are only 216 million dollars away from getting 1% of the total amount needed. HAHA

See you all there!

Drinking Liberally Meetup, Dec 7

Hello All!

Join us tomorrow, Friday December 7th for our regularly scheduled meetup in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South, State Street) from 6:0-9:00 PM. There is a bachelorette party scheduled in the room at 9:00 so it might get crowded.

We can talk about Proposition 2 and how the Utah legislature thinks that Utahns exercising direct democracy is cute and all but that they know what is really best for us. Nevermind that the issue has been before the legislature for the last four years and they did not do anything until the people acted on their own behalf.

Or, if you have a 401K, we can talk about how wild swings in the stock market seem to be the new normal. Though it got buried by the four days of wall to wall, non-stop media coverage of H.W. Bush’s death, the Dow dropped 800 points in one session after Trump presumably raided Roseanne’s Ambien stash and proceeded to Tweet out a series of messages that undermined the previous day’s progress in trade talks with China. Add to that a record deficit, record national debt and a concerted GOP effort to gut Social Security and I doubt any of us will get to retire.

Or, if you are a bit more worldly minded, French protesters just forced the French government to capitulate after weeks of contentious collective action across France. It sucks that they are protesting fuel taxes aimed at curbing emissions and protecting the environment but I have to respect that the French people are the world’s leading experts in coordinated civil disobedience.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening! Join your host, Jason, to have a couple of drinks and talk about these topics and whatever else you want.

Drinking Liberally this Friday!

Greetings Drinking Liberally Folks! There may be some winter weather tomorrow night, but come join us anyway at Piper Down for warm conversation. The most likely “hot” topic of the week might be … are things finally starting to break in the Mueller investigation? Let’s hope so, and hope to see you there!

Drinking Liberally tonight

Hello thankful liberals!

Just a quick note to tell you we WILL be meeting tonight at our usual time and place (6pm in the back room of the Piper Down). We’ve got some extra things to be thankful for this week, as the final numbers came in from the election and we once again have a Democrat representing Utah in the US congress! And prop 4, the fair boundaries initiative, passed in its close count. So if you’re in town (or back in town visiting family), join us!

See you tonight!

Drinking Liberally Friday November 16th

Drinking Liberals,

Join us this Friday November 16th for our regularly scheduled meeting in the back bar of Piper Down at 1492 s state st in Salt Lake City.

I don’t even know where to begin with the multitude of things we can discuss. The last few weeks have been completely crazy. The prop 2 people are threatening a lawsuit over the LDS church’s involvement in getting a compromised bill passed that overwrites what the people voted for. Mia Love is trying to sue Salt Lake County about the election results. Republicans all over the country are trying to stop recounts and question official results with lawsuits. The president, our Lord Cheeto is only exacerbating the situation by pushing every possible election conspiracy theory there is via twitter and official speeches from the White House. Including banning CNN from the press room for doing their constitutional right and duty for pressing the president to answer hard questions. Something that even Fox News is actually backing CNN against.

Please join me, Christian, as I host this weeks meeting and we unload from the week and discuss the weeks events over a drink or two of whatever we want to drink.

See you soon,
Christian, Laura,
Jeremiah, Jason

Raise your glass to Democracy this Friday!

Wow, what a week! I think we all knew there’d be much to talk about after the election, but who knew it would come with some bonus BS?! We might not have gotten as big of a blue wave as we wanted, but we got some pretty big wins. Democrats took the House! A record number of them women! And more people of color! Many people have been given back their voting rights after time served! And the caravan threat disappeared!

There was some good news locally too, including all the good ballot initiatives that look to be set to pass for things like Medicaid expansion, fair boundaries, and medical marijuana. It’s still a fairly tight race between Mia Love and Ben McAdams, but it looks like Ben will win, which will put a nice splash of blue on our congressional district map.

Join us tomorrow to celebrate the good things from this election, raise a glass to the good candidates who lost, and mentally prepare for what’s ahead! We’ll be in the back room (north side) of the Piper Down starting at 6.

Drinking Liberally tomorrow

Hello,

Another week, another big bowl of B.S. to talk about. For instance, a conspiracy theory that would’ve been ignored or laughed out of existence in the past ( the theory being that Democrats were behind the suspicious packages in order to help them in the elections) were quickly picked up and parroted by some prominent people on the right. Trump at one point called for unity, but of course that didn’t last long after he decided it was the media’s fault people were angry. It all might be funny if it weren’t so scary.

Locally, after UofU student Lauren McCluskey was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend (who had not disclosed he was a convicted felon), Rep Brian King proposed several bills that would make it harder for a felon to obtain a gun. There’s probably a number of things to be learned from this tragedy, and I’m happy to see someone on the hill taking action.

Join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6. Laura will have a political debate game called The Contender that sounds pretty fun too. See you tomorrow!

Jason, Christian

Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half of the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.
