Drag Queen Bingo for the ACLU of Utah

The ACLU of Utah is the lucky charity selected to benefit from the monthly Drag Queen Bingo fundraiser in April. Since it sounds like a lot of fun and it’s for a good cause, we thought we’d let our fellow liberal drinkers know about it. Hopefully you can come out and participate.
A benefit for the ACLU of Utah
Doors open at 6:15 with the show starting at 7, and it will be held at the First Baptist Church at 777 S and 1300 E. See you there!

And then on Friday, December 18th, there’s the Santa Pub Crawl (Click for the Facebook event page) started by Babs Delay. Here’s the tentative schedule:

6:00-7:30: O’Shucks – 22 East 100 South (downstairs)
7:30-8:30: The Beer Hive – 128 South Main Street
8:30-10:00: Murphy’s Bar and Grill – 160 South Main Street

Pioneer Day Party with Sister Dottie S. Dixon! – $15

This Pioneer Day, Drinking Liberally will be celebrating in true Utah style. Our party/fundraiser will feature the hilarious quintessential Utahn Sister Dottie S. Dixon (http://www.sisterdottie.com)!

$15 dollars will get you in the door (or $10 if you bring a casserole for the casserole contest that ‘casserole connoisseur’ Sister Dottie will be judging), which includes potent punch, or if punch isn’t your thing we’ll have other drinks available. And we can’t forget the jello – we’ll have some little cups of jello for you to try.

There will be a haiku contest as well, so start thinking of your Utah-themed haikus. We’ll also have a great view of the fireworks at the baseball stadium.

We highly encourage you to take Trax!

What: Party/fundraiser celebrating Utah in Drinking Liberally style

Who: You and your liberal friends + Sister Dottie S. Dixon

Cost: $15 per person, or $10 per person with a casserole (entrance includes drinks)

When: July 24th at 6pm (We’re trying to beat the crowds for parking since it’s so close to the baseball stadium)

Where: Get onto 1300 South, then turn North onto West Temple. Turn East into parking lot of Associated General Contractors and continue back toward the warehouse.

Parking: Take Trax if possible, but if you’re driving there’s an adult corrections building just north of the warehouse that usually has some parking. The baseball game starts at 7:05, so if you’re driving try to get there early.

The Boxcar Children

So we have reached that time in the legislative cycle where lawmakers frantically try to get their bills heard during this legislative session. You see, last Thursday was the last day to submit bills without the House or Senate considering it beforehand.

In an effort to get things in order, lawmakers will – in legislative speak – have the “bill numbered by title without any substance.” These bills are known as “boxcars” in political jargon, and act as a way for lawmakers to hold their place in line when they are finally ready to put a bill froward. Now these bills have nothing in them and literally consist of just the bills name, number, and sponsor – no change of legal code, not radical ideas that would plunge the state into chaos, no…just the bills name, number, and sponsor.

But, man, some of them are sooooo tantalizing; here are a few I would love to write about if they just had some meat to them:

H.B. 171 – Children’s Health Insurance Program Amendments – K. Holdaway
H.B. 335 – Health Insurance Transparency – J. Biskupski
H.B. 336 – Concealed Firearms Amendments – C. Wimmer
H.B. 339 – Legislator – Benefit Plans – E. Hutchings
H.B. 347 – Alcoholic Beverage Control Act Modifications – G. Hughes
H.B. 349 – Heavy Beer Amendments – C. Oda
H.B. 376 – Revisions to Alcoholic Beverage Control Act – G. Hughes
H.B. 384 – Public Lewdness Amendments – D. Ipson
H.B. 400 – Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission amendments – C. Oda
H.B. 405 – Geothermal Pool Amendments – K. Sumsion
H.B. 414 – Eminent Domain Modifications – C. Frank
H.B. 417 – Revision to Local Government – M. Noel
H.B. 426 – Tobacco Monies – M. Newbold
H.B. 428 – Unemployment Insurance Amendments – S. Mascaro
H.B. 440 – Nuclear Power Generation and Distribution – J. Seegmiller
S.B. 72 – Taxes on Motor Fuels – J. Valentine
S.B. 190 – Acquisition of a Billboard by Eminent Domain – W. Niederhauser
S.B. 203 – Revisions to Transportation – S. Jenkins
S.B. 205 – Redevelopment Agency Amendments – C. Bramble
S.B. 215 – License Plates Amendments – G. Bell
S.B. 218 – License Plates Modifications – P. Knudson
S.B. 223 – City and County Carbon Credits for Sequestration of Waste Stream Materials – R. Romero
S.B. 224 – Highway Construction Material Amendments – C. Bramble
S.B. 239 – Transportation Revisions – S. Killpack

Drinking Liberally at the Utah Brewers Festival

Utah Brewers Festival

We are excited to have been invited to have a booth at the Utah Brewers Festival on October 6th. It will be held at the Gallivan Center (239 S. Main Street) and will have quite a number of local breweries.

This will be a great opportunity to find more Liberal Drinkers in Salt Lake, extend our liberal social circles, and try some good local beer.

The Brewers Festival has offered to waive the standard booth fee, but we need to get volunteers to thank them. If you’re interested in spending a few hours helping sell T-Shirts, help with a dart tournament, etc. please send us an e-mail and we’ll get you in touch with the organizer. saltlakecity at drinkingliberally.org.

Democracy For America’s Training Weekend

Howard Dean’s presidential bid may have fizzled in 2004, but Democracy for America is still alive and kicking. The local chapter, aptly titled Democracy for Utah, still meets monthly and maintains an excellent blog and calendar.

D4U’s president, Carrie Ulrich, visited DL last night and told us about a weekend training workshop put together by Democracy for America. DFA is trying to ensure that we continue to elect progressive leaders in 2007 and beyond. The training if for anyone involved in a progressive group, running for office, working to elect someone, local activists, and grassroots supporters.

Visit Democracy for Utah’s website for more information or www.dfalink.com/uttraining to RSVP and pay online.
