Hello Everyone!
First we would like to thank Rocky Anderson and Christine Steinquist for joining us last week to speak about the Medical cannabis initiative and TRUCE’s lawsuit against the replacement bill that the Utah legislature quickly passed in December. If there was one major take away it is that we need to stay actively involved and challenge our legislators as they attempt to do a similar replacement effort this session with propositions 3 & 4 on Medicare expansion and independent redistricting.
Join us this evening, Friday, February 1st, for one of our regularly scheduled meetups from 6:00-9:00 PM in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) where we will have a lot to talk about.
In the News
The Utah legislative session is underway and this year’s theme so far seems to be to undermine the will of the citizens and to callously attack transgender people. There is some social justice bills coming up so this should get contentious real fast!
The President has been Tweeting, in between secret meetings with Russians it seems. He thinks he is smarter than the combined heads of the nation’s national intelligence agencies, he thinks the polar vortex disproves global warming, and his wall is back to being a wall again. I am sure there was more but those are the few that stuck out.
Are your kids ready to fight in Venezuela? Someone informed the President just how much oil they have and now it seems that they really need some good old fashioned American freedom brought to them. Apparently the Venezuelan authoritarian dictator is worse than the dozens of authoritarian dictators around the world we fund and support. I am looking at you Egypt…
In sad local news we have lost two champions of liberal causes in recent days. Archie Archuleta was a decades-long Civil Rights activist who was a friend and mentor to many of Utah’s current community leaders, especially those on the westside of the Salt Lake Valley. It is highly likely that if you were to ask anyone involved in liberal or progressive causes in Utah that they have an Archie story or two that they could share with you.
Also Forrest Shaw, a friend to many in this group and an infrequent attendee to DL meetups, died yesterday. He was an original member of The Left Show and in recent years he was a strong advocate for Medicinal Cannabis. He would testify year after year before the Utah legislative committees about the excruciating personal details of his terminal cancer, diagnosed at 40. He continued to advocate, badger, and challenge until he physically could not do it any more.
Both Forrest and Archie will be dearly missed.
On that somber note, we look forward to seeing everyone this evening! Join your host, Jason, and we can lift a glass to absent friends and then try and figure out the rest of the whole mess.
