*WE ARE MEETING AT HANDELBAR NOT AT PIPER DOWN*
Due to the St. Patrick’s holiday weekend we will not be meeting at Piper Down this week. It is their busiest weekend and we normally don’t get together but we decided to do so this year and Dave said he would reserve some spots for us at Handelbar bar at 751 N 300 W in Salt Lake City starting at our normal time at 6 pm. Please join us at 6 or whenever you can get there until 9pm. There will be a band that starts at 9pm. Handelbar is a great place with great drinks and food. Handelbar
There is always enough for us to talk about with the legislative session and national news. The state Senate overwhelmingly approved 6% ABV beer in grocery stores but the House didn’t. The US Senate just terminated Lord Cheetos national emergency over border wall funding including Utah’s senators. However Cheeto said he will veto it and there is not enough votes in the house and senate to override it. So was it just a dog and pony show by our senators? Beto O’Rourke said he is in for President in 2020. So we have a lot of front runners running in the primaries. Is his candidacy a good thing considering his lack of national leadership? Who knows. Come talk to me and everyone else about it this Friday March 15th at HANDELBAR NOT PIPER DOWN. LOL
See you Friday night,

IMPORTANT NOTE: NEXT Friday the 15th, we’ll be meeting at the HandleBar in the Marmalade neighborhood, because Piper Down will be crazy for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The address is 751 N 300 W.
So much happening at the state legislature as we head into the final week. The tax bill is dead, though it’s rumored that there will be a special session to address it.
And then just this afternoon a small group of young LGBT activists staged a sit-in in front of the Governor’s office to protest his approval of a substitute bill by Rep Lisonbee that greatly watered down the anti-conversion therapy bill (a good summary from Robert Gherke here). Their protest was fruitful – Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox came out and sat with them to talk, and in the end gave them a written apology from the Governor.
In national news, the big news this afternoon was about the first sentencing of Paul Manafort – just 47 months!
How do you feel about these things? Come to your weekly Liberal therapy session at the Piper Down this Friday at the Piper Down!
See you tomorrow!

In The News
This week saw the Cohen testimony. Many hours later and it seems Democrats were asking, “Who and what should we subpoena next?” while Republicans were shocked that fine, upstanding, politicians like themselves were being subjected to the words of a
Meanwhile, the President’s honeymoon get away with Kim Jong Un in Hanoi did not go well. It seems that North Korea was stalling, and holding out for more concessions. Just like his father and grandfather did every time they were involved in talks. Who would have seen that coming? I mean besides every region foreign policy expert in the world.
Locally, Julio Castro, 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful #347, was in town yesterday. A few DL members attended his event. Maybe we can get a report at the meetup.
In legislative session news it looks like the small government Utah legislature is going to put more limitations and regulations on abortion rights in Utah. And we may be getting real, adult beer in Utah.
Also, Cosmo, BYU’s mascot, has come out as gay. That must have been a tough four years. I guess he missed the memo about how one is supposed to enjoy the college experience.
It has been one long, strange week in news.
Join your host Jason this Friday night where we can talk about all this and more! I am thinking the Oscars may come up…
Hello Liberals,
It’s time again to meet at our regular haunt and chat about the topics of the week. The legislature is in session, so there’s plenty to talk about. From the gay conversion therapy bill to straight party voting to horse race betting – we can talk about it. Come join us and let us know what bills you’re watching this session. And of course there’s the ongoing circus at the national level.
See you all this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down!

Drinking Liberals,
Please join us for our regularly scheduled Friday evening meetup in the back bar of Piper Down 1492 s state st starting at 6pm.
We always have lots to talk about, especially with the legislative session in full swing right now. The legislatures doesn’t care what we vote on, they will just completely change our initiatives. A bill to expand our beer in stores from 4% ABV to 6% ABV cleared committee but the church has come out against it so it might not pass now. On the national level a spending bill will pass before the current one will expire at the end of Friday and Trump will most likely sign it this time. Reports are coming in right now that say Lord Cheeto will declare a national emergency to get his wall funded.
So come in and talk with all of us while sip our favorite beverages and discuss the current events.
See You Friday Night,
Pam, Dan, Laura,
Jason, Christian, Jeremiah

Have you recovered from the SOTU yet, or did you skip it altogether?
Let’s get together and talk about that as well as the local stuff. Like how the legislature is back in session and they’re trying to replace the Medicaid expansion ballot initiative (prop 3) with something more expensive and covers less people! Who do these yahoos work for?
Join your host Laura this Friday night starting at 6pm!

Hello Everyone!
First we would like to thank Rocky Anderson and Christine Steinquist for joining us last week to speak about the Medical cannabis initiative and TRUCE’s lawsuit against the replacement bill that the Utah legislature quickly passed in December. If there was one major take away it is that we need to stay actively involved and challenge our legislators as they attempt to do a similar replacement effort this session with propositions 3 & 4 on Medicare expansion and independent redistricting.
Join us this evening, Friday, February 1st, for one of our regularly scheduled meetups from 6:00-9:00 PM in the back bar at Piper Down (1492 South State Street) where we will have a lot to talk about.
In the News
The Utah legislative session is underway and this year’s theme so far seems to be to undermine the will of the citizens and to callously attack transgender people. There is some social justice bills coming up so this should get contentious real fast!
The President has been Tweeting, in between secret meetings with Russians it seems. He thinks he is smarter than the combined heads of the nation’s national intelligence agencies, he thinks the polar vortex disproves global warming, and his wall is back to being a wall again. I am sure there was more but those are the few that stuck out.
Are your kids ready to fight in Venezuela? Someone informed the President just how much oil they have and now it seems that they really need some good old fashioned American freedom brought to them. Apparently the Venezuelan authoritarian dictator is worse than the dozens of authoritarian dictators around the world we fund and support. I am looking at you Egypt…
TOMORROW NIGHT we’re excited to have Mayor Rocky Anderson and TRUCE founder Christine Stenquist out to speak about the current status of the medical marijuana initiative and TRUCE’s lawsuit against the replacement bill that the Utah legislature quickly passed in December.
Since guest speakers often coax out people who’ve never been out before, here’s some useful information: Piper Down is at 1492 S State Street, and parking is limited to the streets around Piper Down. Do not park in the Ho Ho Gourmet parking lot, they will tow you. Make sure to bring your ID, and then find us in the back room straight past the main bar. We usually invite our guest speakers up around 7-7:30, so to ensure good parking and a good seat, get there earlier than that. We’ll be there by 6.
ALSO if you’re one of the many people out of work due to the Trump/McConnell shutdown, please join us and we’ll buy your drinks. I’m sure our members would be willing to pitch in on that too.
See you tomorrow night!

Hello liberals,
First thing we want to mention: On the 25th of this month we’ll have Mayor Rocky Anderson and TRUCE founder Christine Stenquist out to speak about the current status of the medical marijuana initiative and TRUCE’s lawsuit against the replacement bill the Utah legislature quickly passed in December. So put Friday, January 25th on your calendar now!
We’re on day 20 of Trump’s government shutdown, and Utah has seen a spike of about 1,300 unemployment claims from furloughed federal workers. Our national parks are shut down, and for a state that gets a lot of money from tourism, that’s a problem. Did anyone watch the national address? Are you being impacted by the shutdown? Come join us to talk about the shutdown and much more this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6pm.
See you tomorrow night!
